Jordan Pickford

All he can do is shout at people and wave his T-Rex arms around. Get Lee Camp in (or something).

Sad fact is he's probably still the best English keeper. I think the other options which get picked regularly are Nick Pope (who isn't great with the ball at his feet) and Dean Henderson (ditto, and is also beaten a lot from range - unless he's improved that since leaving us).

Aaron Ramsdale would be an option but he's decided to swap Arsenal's reserves for Southampton who are heading for relegation. And his kicking was the reason that Arteta decided to replace him with Raya only a year or so after signing him.

I think pretty much all of the other clubs in the PL have foreign first choice keepers and realistically they need to be playing in a top flight because picking a reserve or someone from the Championship doesn't have the top level experience.

Whilst it would be nice to see Carsley or whoever ultimately takes over give some more people a chance the fact we now have the nations league in place of friendlies when we aren't playing qualifiers means that we don't have the opportunity to experiment in a match which doesn't matter or count towards something. Carsley experimented last night, we lost, and got pelters for it. Even though we usually qualify via the qualifiers themselves and don't need a nations league place to get into the Euros or World Cups.

Like I said last night on another thread it could eventually go the way the League Cup gets treated where managers just make changes and try something else out or pick some fringe players.

I'm pretty pissed off he's now got his own thread on our forum, and even more so now I've replied to it.

He's been awful, and is still awful, England need to move on and get a keeper identified and in, ready for the next world cup.
I'd play Hendo as he's the only one the right side of 30. Accept he's still a bit inexperienced and will learn from his mistakes. Other options are limited.

Other countries do this - Spain brought in Unai Simon when he was quite young and he made that awful clanger to let in the OG from the half way line vs Croatia in Euro 2021. But even in that game he played well and is one of their better players.

We could do well to boost the confidence of the players we have but then Pickford probably isn't a long term answer now. It's not like Seaman or Peter Schmeichel still playing in their late 30s and early 40s. Seaman was 39 in the 2002 WC

Manuel Neuer is still going strong at 38, although he has recently retired from duty with Die Nationalelf, to concentrate on playing for FC Bayern.

I don't even care if he's England's best keeper, I absolute despise watching him play football. I can't be doing with his over the top theatrics that nobody appreciates apart from himself.

He's a weird one for me.

He's far more erratic than I can ever feel comfortable with, but he's always been good in tournaments so it seems unfair to ever single him out as a potential weak link - even though he most definitely is.

That said, we're not exactly blessed with top quality goalkeepers anymore, nor have we been for a long time so, regrettably, there's no alternative option who clearly outshines him.

I've always liked Pope as a goalkeeper and is so far ahead of Pickford in pretty much every aspect of goalkeeping - except the modern need to be good with your feet. Plus he seems to get injured a lot whenever a tournament is on the horizon so it's probably never going to happen for him.

Ramsdale was looking the most likely challenger but his career has nosedived recently and hasn't been getting near recent squads. God knows what his prospects will look like come the end of the season if things don't get better for Southampton.

I guess we'll see if Henderson keeps the shirt for the next match. He's definitely got the self assurance to make a go at the number one shirt but there's going to be tougher tests ahead.

It's weird to think that Jordan Pickford has 71 caps now - only a few behind David Seaman. Yet Pickford has never really felt like a proper, undisputed England number one to me - certainly not in the same way that David Seaman did.

Seaman was an excellent goalkeeper and played at the top level for many years - and he had to be with someone like Nigel Martyn going for the same spot. Pickford just feels like a "I'll guess he'll do" keeper because there's nobody else.

Most of the time I think Tim Flowers was the backup to Seaman, Martyn really only got in the picture slightly later.

In 1996 our keepers were Seaman, Flowers and Walker
1998 it was Seaman, Flowers and Martyn
Euro 2000 Seaman, Martyn and Wright
2002 Seaman, Martyn and James

Jordan Pickford?

Always reminds me of a rough kid outside a chip shop with their screwed up face, giving everyone attitude, looking to nick a bike.

Interestingly enough, there was a weird annomoly of sorts when Nigel Martyn made England's Euro 92 squad ahead of David Seaman with Chris Woods as number one.
