Banned from Twitter - you been arguing again?!
Calling Piers Morgan a **** is hate speech apparently.

It was worth the ban.

Any chance you can roll out the Twitter thread for those of us who are banned from it?

Been looking at just how good #NFFC’s penalty shoot-out record really is. Very hard to confirm but there can’t be many other teams with a winning ratio as good.

It’s undoubtedly a remarkable sequence we have built up over the last 43 years.

A thread…

I think our first ever shoot-out came in 1970, in a Texaco Cup match against Airdrie of Scotland. The first official game decided by penalties in England was also in 1970 so it seems logical that this was our first.

I covered this game last year, Forest lost 5-2 on penalties.

As penalty shoot-outs didn’t stick around too long after the early 70s we jump a long way until our next one in a recognised game.

Forest competed in the Football League Centenary Tournament held at Wembley in 1988. In the quarter-final they dispatched Aston Villa on penalties.

In the same tournament Forest finally overcame surprise package Tranmere Rovers after a 2-2 draw in the semi-final.

Footage from Tranmere’s You Tube shows a very quick shoot-out which appears to be immediate sudden death. Stuart Pearce converting after a Tranmere miss.

Forest met Sheffield Wednesday in the final and again relied on penalties after a goalless draw. Neil Webb’s penalty handed The Reds the trophy after three consecutive shoot-out victories.

I wonder it this was the first ever penalty-shoot out in a Wembley final… Maybe.

From the early 1990s penalty shoot-outs were used more widely and Forest next challenge came at White Hart Lane in 1996.

An inspired Mark Crossley saved three Spurs penalties in the FA Cup 5th Round replay before sprinting down the pitch to the Forest end.

In 1999 Forest surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Third Division Cambridge in the 3rd Round of the League Cup.

This was their first League Cup shoot-out with Dave Beasant saving the final penalty, but he clearly wasn’t sure if he’d won the tie or not!

A number of League Cup shoot-outs followed with Forest overcoming Stockport (2001), Port Vale (2003) Tranmere (2003) and Chester (2007).

All unremarkable victories in the early rounds, but maintained a strong record on penalties in the competition.

In 2006 we get one hiccup when Forest were knocked out the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy quarter-final by Bristol City on spot-kicks.

This appears to be the only penalty shoot-out defeat in a competitive match since the Airdrie match in 1970.

The next game decided on penalties came in 2011 in a memorable Nottingham derby.

After a thrilling 3-3 draw, Forest progressed to the League Cup second round when Notts sent their final two efforts over the bar having been a single kick away from victory at one point.

Seven years later Forest again needed penalties to overcome Bury at the first hurdle. The shoot-out went on so long some players took two penalties.

Forest had substitute goalkeeper Luke Steele in goal after Jordan Smith’s sending off, and he helped secure a 10-9 penalty win.

And then to 2022 and a turbulent, crazy night at the City Ground in the play-off semi against Sheffield United.

Brice Samba used his water bottle and every other trick he had to save 3 penalties and send Forest to Wembley.

Finally we arrive in the present day and Dean Henderson’s heroics to take Forest back to a first League Cup semi-final in over three decades.

Henderson saved two Wolves penalties to send a packed City Ground crowd away into the rain dreaming of Wembley again.

I’m conscious there could be the odd thing I’ve missed here but I think this captures every #NFFC penalty shoot-out in a competitive game. I’ve purposely not included competitions like the County Cup for instance.

In all, Forest have contested fifteen shoot outs and have won thirteen of them.

In major competitions (League Cup, FA Cup, Play-Offs) Forest have competed in ten penalty shoot-outs and won every single one of them.

A superb record.

Any highlights of the whole shoot yesterday? Or a compilation of our intrepid penalty shootout history?
The BBC has the whole shootout in its highlights. I would link it but for some reason my phone is incapable of doing that.

Remember the heartbreak of that penalty shoot out defeat to Bristol City in the Sherpa Van?

What others ones have there been?
Not sure it was the Sherpa Van trophy, pretty sure it was the Johnson's Paint Pot. There were only about 5000 there and I was one of them :)

Please bin this thread!
I think for the 5th Round against ManUre there are no replays - needs to be settled on the night.
Don't jinx it
