Perch didn't go on to set the world alight but playing in the Premier league is what we're aspiring to at the moment.

Funny really when you think about James Perch, the player considered shite at Forest by so many of us but who went on to play more games in his 3 Premier League seasons than Forest have in 20 years.

Ah yes. Colin Calderwood. Another one sneered at and looked down on by so many but still the only manager to deliver a Forest promotion this century.

Strange old World really.

It was from League 1 at the 3rd attempt (his 2nd) though, which was a division we arguably shouldn't have been in, and only were due to mugson's ineptitude.

With the squad we had, we should have walked it. Grant Holt left wing ... odd.

has the managerial genius gone on to better things managing a bigger club? or had any success thats down to himself only??

Still the only manager to get a promotion for Forest this century no matter how much you want to to run the achievement down by criticising his decisions and achievements afterwards.

I criticised it at the time, not just afterwards ... because it was bizarre.

Northampton fans were glad to be rid at the time and we head hunted him for some reason (Pleat, probably).

He made a right meal of getting us promoted and was found out as soon as we were.

I see what you're saying, and I often think Calderwood is unfairly maligned, but he was a very average manager and his shortcomings became only too clear once he stepped up to this league.

You can say he's the only manager to achieve a promotion this century, but let's be honest, it shouldn't take the reincarnation of Clough to get a club of Forest's side promoted from the third tier of English football; a league that contained such footballing powerhouses as Hartlepool and Swindon.

Hell even Simon Grayson managed to get Leeds out of that league.

Scholar, Wray and Soar achieved promotion ... does that mean they are brilliant at running a football club?

Grolt went on to be the top English goal scorer in the Premier league (for 1 season) and Perch haf 2 successful season in the prem something this club hasnt done in 2 decades.

Grolt would have been decent here had Calderwood not inexplicably decided that he was a winger.

Unfortunately for Grolt, he got chucked out on the left wing, and ultimately bombed out the club because he wasn't better than Agogo that season.

The fact that he had a massive Mardy and then forced a move away helped.

Calderwood falls into the Dougie category of being nothing special but getting the job at hand done, which is more than most

I agree. But then I wasn't passing judgement on Calderwood's abilities as a manager (I have done that elsewhere and made similar judgements to those found here).

I was merely observing that despite so many of us being critical of him (and as above, the cockney spivs) they achieved more promotions at Forest than anyone else in the last 20 years. Which says more about the state of the club than anything else.

I learnt my lesson with Calderwood. I would happily have seen him dismissed in the January of the season we were promoted, for all the reasons mentioned above on this thread. But the club stuck by him and he got us up, somehow. Sometimes you just need to give a manager time, even ones we may not think much of. There's a lesson there and until we learn it Colin Calderwood will remain as the only manager to get Forest promoted this century.

Totally agree, and I think the lesson is don't sack a manager who has you there or thereabouts.

My opinion is, give the right manager time, not, give any manager time.

Obviously the right manager is subjective.
