Current state of the squad

I’d imagine it depends on squad priorities for the club, that’d be the last squad purchase they’d probably look to make.

Anderson’s an 8, and although he could fill in further forward, I think we should develop him in that 8 role.

If Anderson and Sangare really click as a midfield two, it would be a huge shame to then move him into 10, and replaced him at 8 - disrupting two important positions instead of one.

We clearly have CM cover for Anderson if we did that though. I’d rather play Danilo further forward if MGW ever got injured as he did at the end of the 22/23 season.
Think he said his preferred position was a 10, but he was also comfortable playing an 8 or out on the left. Very useful addition with lots of potential.

Collymore!

Grenville Morris
From what I’ve read in most places, his pre-season, and from a geordie supporting mate, he’s preferably an 8.

Doesn’t matter anyway, point was a squad number 10 would be a position we could utilise if someone became available.

You see if counter the first point with record in a relegation battle even more impressive, and I do think he's mobile and takes up that left inside space that we lack in Taiwo's absence.

From a squad point of view I think he'd improve us (over Dennis lets face it), as a nailed on first team starter I'd love better.

I'm pleased with our recruitment so far and trust the club's work... They'll get what we need I think.
Sheff Utd created chances though - they were an attacking side.

If you want to go all statistics then Brereton actually underachieved his predicted xG last season. I just don't think he brings anything to the table for us, and back to my original point that I made first - he has consistently got the hump when he's been a backup.

Yeah that's a fair one. Like most players he'll be happier playing - perhaps that's why folk expect us to go big on a striker? I still don't, and while I don't see us getting Brereton I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us in for Akpom again...

It's Baggio

John Robertson
Considering he was playing in a terrible team (comfortably bottom in pretty much every attacking metric), Brereton's 'data' stacks up pretty well from last season. Not sure he's someone we should be looking at though unless we get towards the bottom of the barrel.

Is Anderson an 8? He's been lots of things so far - I'm not sure what his best position is?
8 seems his best fit for me.

Probably not quite got the spark for 10, not enough of a disrupter at 6 and lacks the pace/directness to play on the wing.

At 8 he provides a bit of everything.

Yep.

He’s far from clinical. He’s not scaring any PL defence.

He can ‘do a job’. That’s all

I haven't been blown away by what I've seen so far, though he works very hard and looks to get on the front foot. So far he reminds me a little of a more attack minded and technical Yates. No bad thing, though I expected to see more of him running at/committing people based on the bits I'd read.

I’d place him a couple of levels above Yates. As you say he’s much better technically and wants to receive and move on the ball in tighter areas.

He’s a tidy player with a great workrate.

I think if Sangare can be what we hope he is then either Anderson or Danillo will work well alongside him.

Agree, the need for a striker grows ever more inportant. Not only because we look toothless, but because, although there is time to go, the window is not open for ever and as yet there appears no target on the horizon.

J̌ust get one of chelsea brazillian youngsters on loan that they seemed to hoard these couple of years or maybe that argentine veliz from tottenham.

We've already tried that one and decided not to play him.

I'm not Chelsea will be in a rush to loan us someone else this summer.

4231 squad:

GK: Selz, Miguel
RB: Williams, Moreira
RCB: Milenkovic, Boly
LCB: Murillo, Omobamidele
LB: Aina, Toffolo
RCM: Sangare, Yates
LCM: Danilo, Dominguez
RW: Elanga, ???
AM: MGW, Anderson
LW: CHO, ???
ST: ???, Awoniyi, Wood

Potentially losing 2 (Selz and Omobamidele), and needing to buy anywhere between 3 and 5 new players.

3412 squad:
GK: Selz, Miguel
RCB: Omobamidele, ???
CB: Milenkovic, Boly
LCB: Murillo, ???
RWB: Willaims, Aina
RCM: Sangare, Yates
LCM: Danilo, Dominguez
LWB: ???, ???
AM: MGW, Anderson
STR: Awoniyi, Wood
STL: ???, ???

Potentially losing 2 (Selz and Omobamidele), and needing to buy anywhere between 6 and 8 new players.

Based on that I'd be really surprised if we lined up in a three at the back this year, there's just too much work to do in the market to close the gaps we have. Much easier to just buy one good winger (on the right, if Anderson can deputise on the left) and a striker - that'd be enough to go into the new season with if we're going 4-2-3-1, maybe pickup another winger in the loan market.

Agree Maxi that we're much closer to a back 4 squad than a back 3 squad. But it's Sels, not Selz 😉
It's the z in his first name that gets me every time.

I suspect I'll carry on being ignorant in a sort of Ben Osbourjne nostalgia.

Once upon a time, naming our sports stars was easy. It was all John Smith and Harry Bloggs stuff, now it's all over the place. Sometimes wondering if they are playing jokes on us!

Why might we be losing Omo? Have I missed something?

Just an opinion that he might end up being loaned out, depends on FFP wiggle room and whether we identify anyone else.

We need to make sure the midfielders start to all chip in with a few goals, some long range shots would help. The talent is there, just need to use it properly.
If we can do this we will not be so reliant on the guys up front, of course they can carry on hitting the back of the net too.

Think we tend to dither too long on chances instead of concentrating on hitting the target straight away, many deflections go in every week, but only if you get the shot off :)
