What's your stance on Guillaume?Came to England as William, in 1066.
William is French name withn Germanic roots.
I know you've just seen him play in person so I respect your assesment and that you're saying at as you saw it, but comparing a player who was a mainstay in a team that finished 5th in LaLiga, has Champions League experience and 73 caps for Portugal to Jack Colback seems a bit of a stretch. It was a friendly in Chesterfield after all. This is obviously just based upon 60 mins but overall from what I saw he's tidy enough but nothing to rave about. He's very much a deep lying midfielder and sits in right in front of the defence, he does get about but he's extremely slow. He offers nothing more than what Jack Colback can do for us and I'd be surprised if Cooper thinks he's something we need. I'd be disappointed if we spent money on him at 29 years of age when there's nothing that stands out to say he's going to give us any type of edge in midfield

The way Betis play means they effectively leave a back 2 when in possession so his role is to sit deep in front of them and protect. I get why they have him and he's an important if unspectacular cog in that machine. We don't play that system or way so I really don't see how he'd fit into our midfield. Colback can do that protecting role drifting from side to side and he's just as capable on the ball.I know you've just seen him play in person so I respect your assesment and that you're saying at as you saw it, but comparing a player who was a mainstay in a team that finished 5th in LaLiga, has Champions League experience and 73 caps for Portugal to Jack Colback seems a bit of a stretch. It's a lovely name but also has the same roots. William came first, in both France and England. What's your stance on Guillaume?
Ooh matron.Germanic. Wilhelm: to desire a helmet.
But Wilhelm came first (ooh matron).A later French modernisation of Willame.

from the clips seen of him, this guy plays forward passes and dominate midfield , colback first instinct is passing back and doesn't really dominate , tackles sure but never imposing , this guy looks and plays like a human barrier in the middle 'you shall not pass'. vastly experienced and if reports of 5 million is true , at 30 , he still can do the job for a few more years. The way Betis play means they effectively leave a back 2 when in possession so his role is to sit deep in front of them and protect. I genuinely can't see what he would bring to us that we don't already have in Colback

Seems to be the first player we've been this heavily linked with that a few people are genuinely unsure about. Not sensing as much optimism as there was for the other signings. At least on here anyway.
Absolutely nothing to do with any of what you put mate. I watched him last night and based it purely off what I saw. The caveat is I only saw 60 mins of him and it was just a psf and obviously any real assessment needs to be made over multiple games.like i said with Lingard, it’s because he’s not younger than 23 and/or not from the Bundesliga.
Bill is a class player that has so much experience, to get him at the rumored price would be amazing. we can’t only have a team of youngsters, the price for a kid that does what Bill does would be outrageous, like MGW level.
The same type of analytical thinking can be put forward with older players as well, where you weigh their price and performance as well as questioning their ability to continue their career at a high level. similar to how wolves brought Moutinho in when they got promoted.
would be an extremely solid player if it happens.

For what it's worth I thought he looked alright but nothing special too, although it is worth keeping in mind that was only his second pre-season run out. I'd be surprised if he played in a 2 man midfield, he's not fast and barely got over the halfway line for most of the match, I saw someone on Twitter say he was intense in his pressing and I thought the exact opposite he didn't press anyone at all, certainly isn't one who is gonna go hunting for the ball and in the team to destroy, like you say he's a deep lying playmaker really and his passing is pretty good, I can see BJ, Awoniyi etc. enjoying the balls in behind from deep he's clearly capable of. If Coops is building towards even quicker counter attacking stuff (which the signings we've made so far suggest) I'm not sure where Carvalho fits, he seems to be a player who likes to take his time. This is obviously just based upon 60 mins but overall from what I saw he's tidy enough but nothing to rave about. Interestingly, the Newcastle story at the time said they wanted him to replace an "Under-performing Jack Colback". Curious that Notcher said above he wouldn't bring anything to the table that Colback doesn't ... how times have changed!Haha, this thread and the responses made me chuckle... everyone has wanted this guy at somepoint...
Pretty much how I saw it and I agree with you on the pressing, he closed down when the player was in close proximity but he certainly didn't play a pressing game and that's because of his deep position. Again like you I'm not sure where he fits. For what it's worth I thought he looked alright but nothing special too, although it is worth keeping in mind that was only his second pre-season run out. As Heff mentioned his lack of pace was very apparent. His style and role in that system probably suits the Spanish game where the tempo is usually, slow, slow, quick, quick, slowThe lack of pace does worry me here. Obviously the quality with Portugal caps can’t be denied. Would rather have that stach lad looking at his size, movement and age.
I would liken Carvalho to someone like Rodri but obviously not as good.I seem to remember John Bostock & Bouchalakis having real quality but their lack of pace ensured they didn't make it.
Obviously this lad is a level above.
Also, players like Tom Huddlestone lacked pace, seemingly similar style to William and had a decent career in the top flight.
