Reminds me, we used to go to parties at the ruler of Bahrain, Jack we called him. They had a beach house the other side of Awali.
It was in the days when we has a rest house there, none of these fancy hotels. Gulf Air had three DC3s, no skyscrapers, that sort of bush desert kingdom. Now look at it, even got an enormous bridge thing to Saudi.
Not very much today. No one was able to make a single good chance, with the absence of Kim Min-jae our defence was nonexistent... in short, we were totally cooked!
I had zero expectations anyway so it didn't really hurt that much, at least the miracle run up to the quarterfinals was fun to watch.
But still, it's so disappointing that this is all we can do with the most star-studded squad in the entire continent...
But hey, the tournament isn't over yet! A Jordan vs Iran final is going to be very exciting.
Now, before the online meme narrative spreads that the Asian Cup is a corrupt tinpot that lets the hosts who completely flopped in the World Cup win with the power of home advantage penalties, as someone who actually watched the whole thing I must say that Qatar was a solid team this entire tournament, very different from what you've had last seen.
Sure, they were very lucky with their draw (avoiding all of Korea, Japan and Australia & facing a country that has never played in a final), but their new coach Tintín Márquez who just arrived in December has completely turned the team around & brought the best out of the players in such a short time.
They don't even have a single player in Europe, even Jordan had only one, it shows once again that teamwork is most important in international tournaments. So can we please get Klinsmann sacked???
To conclude, not as too much insane as the AFCON, but this Asian Cup was sure a blast with lots of surprise results! Congratulations for Qatar, and also congratulations for Jordan for exceeding all expectations and reaching their first tournament final ever! A crowning achievement the entire nation must be proud of. Their best players are still young, the future sure looks bright for them.
Now why did I even write this? Judging from the reactions on social media, no one in Europe watches these anyway.
All will be remembered as just another Qatari corruption, sadly.
