Newcastle United are among a host of European clubs showing interest in Villarreal winger Alex Baena, according to Fichajes.

The Magpies, alongside Nottingham Forest and Bayern Munich, have been named as one of the clubs who have activated the Spanish winger's release clause, amid his impressive season in Spain.

According to Fichajes, multiple clubs are willing to pay Baena’s exit fee, standing at €60m (£51m), and have taken firm steps to explore his potential move in January.

Newcastle are reportedly seen as ‘strong contenders’, alongside Forest, who have shown ‘clear interest’ in bringing the 23-year-old to the Premier League this month

I can’t begin to imagine what the reaction from next door will be if we bid 51m for a single player, roughly 6 times their squad value ( minus their loanees) on a single mush,

Well, this is what the prospect of CL football looks like i suppose.

Unless you think CHO and Elanga can play 50+ games next season and/or you think Jota and Sosa are good enough to be taking on the cream of Europe/cementing a top 5 or 6 spot in the PL then this is the sort of quality we're probably going to have to look at for the squad.
Frightening in the respect that one or two dud signings at those values could see it all go horribly wrong but the alternatives are taking punts on cheaper options (Jota/Sosa types) or expecting recruitment to come up with equivalent steals to Milenkovic and Murillo. Neither seem viable long term.
You can see why Villa, Newcastle, Leicester etc struggled with PSR once they got in to Europe.

He’s more of a 10 than an out and out winger which is why I think we don’t need him

Not sure his position matters ..... it's the same point for all the team.
We're moaning (as a fan base generally) about the drop-off from first team players to our bench. None of our first team players are going to be able to play 50+ games next season (apart from maybe the CB's and GK).
