FA Cup replays will be scrapped from the first round onwards in the 2024-25 competition.
No more replays.
Continuing the current run (last 30 years) that EVERY decision made by the bodies running football has been the WRONG decision.
Playing ’to the death’ was one of the ingredients that made the FA Cup great.
At least they've admitted this time that it's because of the biggest clubs in European competition.
I'm not necessarily against scrapping the replays as you get some really huge, unnecessary trips at times. The romantic notion is that the non-league/League 2 clubs will now not be able to earn a money-spinning replay but really how often does that happen? Most of the time it's the likes of us having to play another game against Blackpool or Bristol City often in front of a half empty ground, a game not even the lower club wants. My issue though is that this clearly is a decision that's been taken because of the big clubs pressure.
What I would like to see is the revenue being distributed properly in the competition. From the 3rd round onwards there should be a sliding scale of distribution based on the division of the two teams. For example a Premier League club should give 100% of gate and tv money to a team in League 2 or lower, perhaps 90% to League 1, then 75% to the Championship.
