Callum James Hudson-Odoi

He just needs an overlapping full back in support - get that right next season and a huge problem solved, since teams are already starting to double up.
Two great goals last night and looked dangerous once he got his tail up.

You're right that he often draws two or three and I think Nuno needs to work on exploiting that better. CHO either holds on to it too long, or it goes backwards, or it's a short pass with no subsequent movement.

In games where we have switched it quickly, too often it has gone to Yates centre of goal (not our best creative outlet), or it has made it to Williams who has been playing well but never seems to cross it when it's expected and vice versa.

These are repeated patterns of play we see 10 times in a game so Nuno needs to be drilling sequences in to the players to take advantage.

He can be devastating when cutting inside on to his right.

I do wish he’d have the confidence to go on his left and whip a cross in every now and again. Even if it doesn’t come off it keeps the defender wondering what he’s going to do. That in itself would offer up more space for him to cut inside.
Have been saying the same for a while.

It is such a thin line between being effective and one dimensional. His ‘cut in and shoot’ is obviously a powerful tool in a 1v1 situation but way too often doesn’t take the chance to cross when in the same position but with the opponents having more cover and instead circles back around…probably highlighting his lack of assists.

My probably overly simplistic take there is that he already is doing - Callum checks back when the isolation isn't on so they can work it right in order to either work it back left again if the space is on, or look to get down the right with Elanga/Williams.

If we can get the CM pairing right we've the basis of a good first 11 but very little after that.

I think the ball is moved that way because it's the obvious progression from professional footballers.

I think it's either not being coached, or not coached well enough, because it's too slow, the wrong players are popping up in the space, and Williams is left with too much decision making of his own.

That's just my interpretation though.

Mind you we struggle with lots of other simple things too, like when working an overlap or heading away corners. Maybe it's just the players.

Chos had a decent season, took him a while to get going but since he has he's been fantastic. Hopefully this season has given him his confidence back and next season he will be even better. 1 criticism though I wish he'd try to use his left foot more, his cutting back is too obvious and any footballer with a brain knows what he is going to do. If he just tried a few crosses with his left then it would put some doubt in the defenders mind as to what hes going to do. Sadly not every defender is as dumb as Bogle 😂😂

I think a lack of established pairings doesn't help. It'll come if we can build on what we have...

Do think he needs to try to go round outside more. He won't come up against an Anel Amedhodzic every week who will happily let him cut inside whilst getting nowhere near him.

Overlapping full back will help a bit but there still needs to be a level of uncertainty for defenders.

Fantastic bit of transfer business. I can't believe Chelsea were willing to part with him for £3m, even with that awful achilles injury.

With the strongly rumoured 50% sell on agreement. Even so, still looks like a great bit of business.

I wouldn’t start him against Chelsea. Give him a rest and put him on second half, 60 mins

That’ll give Chelsea something to think about whilst MGW goes through the middle

Seem to remember him putting a decent cross in with his left foot against City, so he can do it.

Club has pictured him and Taiwo arriving for training.

(1) I am enjoying the club not giving the EPL amy more fuel for their crappy little fire and being silent on matters outside of football.

(2) I really liked the tracksuit CHO was wearing and thought the two stars were a hint of a new line we would be introducing.

(3) If you zoom in on the date embroidered on its 29/05/21 which is Chelseas Champions league final win (Cho was in the squad I think) where they won their second star.

I'm now conflicted because I'm sure there will be a connection between CHO and Chelsea still, I don't think I have a problem with him wearing a tracksuit celebrating their win but given we are about to face the very club he is celebrating I'm hoping its a case of him wanting badly to prove to them what a massive error they have made letting him leave at the same time.

I also want adidas to do a version for us because I think it looks class.

I'd just like to say how much I appreciate some of the recent comments in this thread from people who have clearly played the game to a decent level, or else have developed a good understanding of tactical fundamentals/ footballing "physics."

I was shit at football - broke my femur at the wrong age and never caught up or took too long to regain my confidence - so most of my up-close understanding comes from watching my nephew progress through the age-groups and the much more abstract reading and "theory crafting."

I spent 10+ years doing youth work and me and my colleagues - much better technically - would often face off against the yout' in cages (South London - think Sancho, et al). They'd leave me for dead with their tricks, but we'd beat them simply because we'd see the space and pass where it was, rather than relying on skillz and individuality.

But I've never fully understood all the elements that go into an 11-a-side game on a proper pitch, especially physically, in terms of mechanics. So, I really appreciate the posts of those that do, simply because it gives me a glimpse of understanding.

What.
Don’t start our on form player in a game we need something from to secure our EPL survival

Are you mad?

If there's one player I absolutely would be starting against Chelsea it's Hudson-Odoi

He's been on a tear the last few games and will also have a point to prove against his former club
I cannot understand why anyone would want to not play CHO in this one?

He is going to be bang up for it, with a point to prove.

Did you see how the pundits reacted to the Real Madrid player scoring last night one goal similar to CHO from the last game.
It was like the guy had scored one of the best goals ever for Madrid.

Well CHO has scored 4 of those this season

Spot on. Currently first name on the team sheet. I don't care if he's seen as a 'one-trick' pony, I'm happy to see him keep using that same trick until someone can stop him doing it.
If people make the runs to open up the space for him there is no reason why he cant keep scoring those goals

Watch his second goal and the run MGW does to open up the space.

It was f***ing beautiful

I love the way he can control it and make it look easy.

Every time he gets in that position it looks like he's going to score.

The 2nd time he wiped Anel out and Robinson was screaming at him for letting it happen twice.

8 goals this season and probably the best 3 million we have spent.

If he can stay injury free next year and with his confidence back he should be huge for us.

Excited if he and MGW are here for next season. Get a consistent injury free striker in there as well and we look strong up front

Sad he didn't get his winner today. What a player he is though - delighted to have him.

Absolute, and seeing his confidence return as the season has gone on, its been great to watch.

Just hope he all his injuries are behind him
