I'd argue that spending three lamentable seasons in the Third Division was totally down to "footballing decisions" under Nigel Doughty's tenure Alf, so too was a record period of time under embargo, courtesy of the al-Hasawis.

Doughty had nothing to do with the embargo, he kept costs low and wages had a structure, Fawaz smashed that all apart.

    Quite.

One of the first things Mark Arthur did when he took control was to set about reducing our losses, which at the time were reported as a staggering £120k a week.

He was successful in this to the extent that only a year or so later he was able to proudly tell us that we had reduced them to a mere £6m a year.

I wasn't relating the embargo period to Doughty.

I'd made the point about that being under the al-Hasawis in a previous post. However, reading back my post you quoted, I should have made that bit clearer, which I've now done.

Ah that's fair enough, I think Doughty's biggest issue was his lack of foresight and lack of money.

I honestly think he used the impending doom of FFP as a reason to stop spending as he couldn't afford it anymore.

Or he wanted to make the club self-sufficient but couldn't do that and keep us competitive.

Arthur was clearly doing what Doughty wanted. He said so on his interviews, and he would have been sacked if he hadn't. They wanted to run a tight ship but were too cautious to speculate which is why we never got Shorey and broke up the 2002/3 play off team.

Or that, or a mixture of both. Sadly football is just a drain of finances so would virtually never work without a good income stream, which at the time we didn't have.

Agreed. Doughty put a lot of money into the club but it always seemed to be at the wrong time, to make up for previous lack of investment. For instance, the £8m we got for Reid and Dawson was an amazing fee at the time. However, none of that money was invested back in the playing staff and just went to service the debt, almost as if we'd accepted relegation. We'd have probably gone down anyway because Megson was useless, but I think we'd have had a better chance of staying up with Reid and Dawson in the team than Melville, Powell and Friio. And how much did it cost the club being stuck in League One for 3 years? Probably way more than £8m. I suppose i's easy to be critical in hindsight, but as Gamble said, there was a lack of foresight under his stewardship despite the '5 year plan'. Still, I don't doubt he loved the club and did what he thought was best. Not sure I can say that about the current ownership.

Maybe we're just a batshit club that can't be fixed without a lot of fucking money, and quite a bit of luck.

The podcast is well worth a listen. Daniel Taylor comes across well and gives a balanced view. I can't really argue with anything he says. The story about Mourinho's visit to Nottingham is class.

Finally published his ‘long read’ today in The Athletic.
No longer a subscriber as bored rigid by Tails’ turgid contributions.
Would be grateful if someone can - in summary at least - tell me what he has written.

    - Talks about how Dane Murphy has already done more interviews than Vrentzos or Marinakis have since they took over.

    - Goes on to DJ's Tweet calling for the board to resign and more or less says he's spot on.

    - Talks about how weird it is that Vrentzos is still listed as CEO while Murphy is also listed as Chief Executive. (I actually think that might just be what their last occupations are listed as on Companies House, not the roles they're doing at Forest.)

    - Randall invited the supporters trust for a meeting early on where he set out the 5 year plan for promotion, Europe, state of the art training ground and Champions League facilities. Then goes on to say Randall lambasted Andy Caldwell (member of the trust) in front of everyone at the meeting "Randall explained that he had an issue with Caddell and that, if they were going to work together, the club wanted to know from day one that he could be fully trusted."

    - Talks about how these will be Hughton's last days in charge (doesn't even entertain the notion of him staying)

    - Talks about the state the stadium is in with the bird shit etc.

    - Talks about the way the board have treated certain supporters (guy was critical on Twitter and they threatened to stop his 8 year old daughter from being mascot if he didn't delete the Tweets)

    - Johnny Owen emailed Copa after they did that video on us to tell them they'd never work with the club again because the video didn't focus on the Greeks but Doughty.

    - Talks about how Murphy wants to move the club forward with a recognisable identity, also says the rumours about him resigning were just that but "The Athletic’s understanding is that he intends to stick it out but that his first couple of months have been an eye-opener, to say the least."

    - It gives a couple of anecdotes about incompetence from Vrentzos' time (players came back to half the amount of showers and a hole in the floor where a new ice bath should've been)

    - Short bit about the club asking the Guardian to take articles down and being angry when they refused and then a bit about Marinakis trying to buy or contribute financially to the Guardian (more for political reasons than footballing ones)

    - Says how none of the things Marinkais has been accused of have ever stuck.

    - Talks about the new staff (Roushdi, Brass, Syrianos).

    - Says it's really time for this regime to deliver, fans are getting very sceptical because they've over-promised and under-delivered far too many times.

    - Finishes by basically saying Clough would be spinning in his grave "Dear old Cloughie never liked club directors at the best of times. He’d have wanted some of these people chucked in the River Trent."

Dear old Cloughie did not have much time for some journalists either; he would have certainly put Taylor back in his box.

They really need their ego's massaging at every turn don't they?

If we were doing well I can understand people tolerating this stuff. But 2 years running fighting relegation? They need to be groveling rather than bullying.

    What an absolute embarrassment.

They aren’t fit to be custodians of Nottingham Forest.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

I actually didn't think it was as bad as I was expecting really. Name an organisation without internal conflicts? There isn't one. Also think the stuff about Murphy resigning is a complete storm in a tea cup. The job is harder than he expected, so what. Been the case for many jobs I've been involved in, he could well relish the challenge.

Interesting article, but bits do my head in. Uses an example of a frustrated City moaning about how there's been no progress in his lifetime, ends the article talking about Brian Clough.

Talk about rubbing it in, for fucks sake.

Every organisation will have its internal tiffs which get blown out of proportion when things are not going to plan, Its going to end in tears because Johnson senior and Taylor have really got the bit between their teeth to oust the reigning board which i expect Marinakis will not allow to happen
