Although Rangers can be equally detestable, it is good that they’ve won the annual 2 horse race up there just to piss off the Celtic fans.

I’m firmly with The Jags on this.

He gave up a lot to support the woman he loved and he served this country with great distinction.

This is a thread where, despite getting sidetracked, we can pay a man who totally deserved it, the utmost respect.

Keep the politics and views on Royalty out of it.
Lucky enough to meet him and have a chat at his 80th birthday celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall, it was mainly to celebrate the D of E award and I was lucky enough to be invited. He was charming, erudite and interesting and quite frankly at 80 I hope I can be the same.

Only another week to go and then the funeral is on the Telly.

Can't see the point of watching or going to a funeral of someone you have never met if you can't attend the buffet afterwards.

Every time I ring home to speak to my Dad he tells me about someone else's funeral he has been at. Although not as much recently due to Covid Restrictions in the last year.

I am frightened to turn on the telly next week in case I see him gatecrashing the Buffet at that one.

By the way, despite Morrissey being a complete dickhead, The Queen is Dead is still one of the best albums of all time in my opinion.

There aren’t enough photos of Comrade Brezhnev on this forum.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

The Soviets knew how to have a proper funeral.

    Exactly.

„Lying in State“ was a proper thing in the Soviet Union.

Our politicians are good at lying in office.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

Politicians wouldn't know a seven hour working day if it punched them in the eye.

Which reminds me of a really funny exchange I saw on Judge Judy once which went something along the lines of

Judge Judy - Do you work

Defendant - No, I am disabled

Judge Judy - Whats the nature of your disability

    Defendant - I have a bad back

Judge Judy - Do you have children

    Defendant - Yes I do

Judge Judy - How old are they

Defendant - 2 and the other is 11 months old

Judge Judy - if you can have sex and make a baby then you can work

    Defendant - Sex doesn't last 8 hours

Judge Judy - Thats not my problem

    Hilarious, I pissed myself laughing

They are not perfect, never will be, but they deserve support and praise for devoting their lives to public service. RIP Prince Phillip.

I am not a royalist, but I actually pity them being born in to that goldfish bowl. If I died now and was given the option to start again from day one with the silver spoon as a royal or start with nowt as a commoner id choose commoner every day of the week.

I doubt you'd still say that if you had the possibility to experience life as a Royal. If it was as bad as many people claim it is for them, with horrendous hours and permanent subjugation by the press, then you'd expect more of them to abdicate the institution than there has been.

Even Harry leaving wasn't to become a "normal" person - he still wants to monetise his brand potential and hasn't been afraid to be in the limelight.

That said, I'm a scientist and I like evidence rather than opinion, so why don't we do an experiment, cutting their funding for a year and telling them to go live in Elephant and Castle, then at the end of the year they can decide to carry on like that or take their previous positions and tax payer funding...

Love life as millionaires getting to experience the finest things in life, visiting countries and places you could only dream of and being looked after hand and foot 24/7.

Or having to work a 9-5 on minimum wage on a council estate.

    Hmm

I agree with Gobias. Obviously a lot of people have it much harder. But royals couldn't just be themselves. Wills was born a future King, and has had to behave in the way that is expected of one at all times. Must be exhausting.

He's probably never done anything controversial or even spontaneous his entire life. Harry described them as 'trapped' in that life. It's easy to see how it must feel like that at times. Most of them didn't choose that life. Nobody in Royal family ever seems to be happy.

If they're unhappy, they can simply leave and forgo any tax-payer money. They can get a job in Morrisons. Press will have a field day for a few months but after that would lose interest in them, they'd be free to live a life of their own choosing.

You know who else work incredible hours and are pillaged by the media? Bankers. I'm guessing we shouldn't fawn over them?

Bankers make a choice as an adult to take a job in a bank. That's a little less permanent.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want their life because they work long hours. Who doesn't?

I wouldn't want my entire life to devoted to behaving in a way considered befitting of the nation's figurehead, have my entire family expect that of me for life before I've even splashed down, with the only alternative being to saying "feck you family, and most of the nation's expectation" and go to live my life estranged from them as a terrorist target with limited security. Doesn't look all it cracked up to be.

I think members of the Royal Family, like celebrities, can often keep a low profile if they want to. They do lead an incredibly privileged life, it's just some aspects of it have to be compromised in order to maintain that lifestyle.
