For those on here who use Reddit (and there’s more than just me, given the amount of content reposted here) you might not be aware the Reddit has recently implemented a new user-visibility features that shows when you’re actively „online“ on Reddit.
This is something that nobody asked for, or wanted, and is generally considered a very bad thing for user privacy.
Effectively there’s a new icon that looks like a green light on your profile that shows when you’re online. Therefore, you could be implicitly spammed by people on Reddit’s useless chat feature, or implicitly tracked and targeted by advertisers.
Here’s a Reddit announcement about this:
https://old.reddit.com/r/changelog/c...ce_indicators/
If you want to disable this „feature“ (and, trust me on this, you do) you’ll need to go to Reddit in a web browser and disable it.
Helpfully - one might even think deliberately - the option to shut If off isn’t present in the user settings on the newer version of Reddit, so you’ll need to change to https://old.reddit.com/ and then go to „Preferences“, „Privacy Options“ and then disable the option „Let others see my online status“ to turn it off for good.
Of course, Reddit enabled this by default for everyone, which is incredibly invasive.
Note of you’re using the „official“ Reddit app on iOS or Android, you can, under your username, click on the „Online“ green text and it will switch it to „Hiding“ (like you’re doing something wrong!) but this then resets to „Online“ again the next time you use the app or log in. Disabling it in „Preferences“ as above turns it off for good (for now, anyway).
As you might expect, reaction to this has been almost universally negative.
As ever on Reddit, r/privacy is well worth subscribing too.
Hope this may be of interest to fellow Redditors.
„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“
„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Oh and if you’re on iOS, the official Reddit app is a bit rubbish, use Apollo instead.
You can thank me later.
tech platform is invasive shocker.

Thanks Chris - I'd hate for my frequenting of furry porn subreddits to become common knowledge.

No mate, if you do it on the Reddit website as detailed about, then your status is reflected in BaconReader.
If BaconReader supports the ability hide yourself from within the app (dunno...?) then it will only come back the next time you access, like the „official“ client does.
My Reddit home page is just porn.

I'm with Dogtits on this, the porn is of a very high standard on there.
I also like how the threads stay on subject...
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
Proper moderators is what I heard.
EXACT SAME BENEFITS
Yes it is, the same sort of thing.
Although here, we don’t have an annoying „live chat“ like Reddit does that is user-to-user.
We also don’t Target-ad - what adverts you see on this forum are via Google syndication and based on the data Google tracks about you.
