    Default Ian St. John

Yes, he played for the scousers, but he will for many be forever one-half of „Saint and Greavsie“, an important pre-match ritual:

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Sad news. I used to love watching Saint and Greavsie back in the day.

RIP. Saint & Greavsie was the start of every weekend of football.

Cooked meat from the butcher's on fresh baguette from the bakery in front of Saint & Greavsie post-swimming lessons and journey home to Carpenters/Nik Kershaw soundtrack.

Saint & Greavsie was required viewing when I was growing up. The show's warmth and humour came effortlessly, in a way that Soccer AM can only dream of. It came in the era when footballers eat steak, watched Fools and Horses, lived in mock-Tudor mansions and drove cars emblazoned with the name of a local Ford dealership. In other words, when the game was less up its own arse and just more fun.

    RIP Saint.

Saint was the voice of a Saturday lunchtime until I was old enough to go to the pub

I'm old enough to remember Saint and Greavesie - I'm also pretty sure St. John and Callaghan were still playing for Liverpool when I travelled to Old Trafford and saw Forest beat them 1-0 in that League Cup Final replay.

Correction! After starting to read the BBC Sport obituary I learn that St John left Liverpool in 1970! Callaghan was playing against Forest - I guess in my mind they belong in the same Liverpool side.

Always associate his voice with summing up the previous week’s night matches during the week (cups and euro games) on On the Ball on a Sat morning and of course later on saint and greavsie.

I have a lot of respect for that Shankly Liverpool team and the way he transformed them from Liverpool's second club in the second division into not only the top club on Merseyside but the European powerhouse they have been more or less ever since. Ian St John played a big in that successful Shankly team.

That was before Paisley and our duels with them and when I began hating them.

Saint and Greavsie was part of the staple Saturday for people of a certain age.

Saw Jimmy Greaves on a clip on social media yesterday - he looks awful after his debilitating stroke a year or so back - so very sad all round

    Farewell, Saint.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?
