Good words from a former player about Chris Hughton in a piece on the BBC about Birmingham's League Cup win.

Chris Hughton was drafted in as McLeish's replacement. He wasn't just tasked with overseeing a promotion charge, but a Europa League campaign after the Carling Cup success. Steven Caldwell was one of a number of players to arrive that summer.

"I didn't sense any negativity around the club," he says. "I was looking forward to a Europa League campaign and playing in a team I thought could win the Championship.

"Chris was a brilliant manager. He knew what he wanted, respected where people had played and didn't micro-manage. It was a good fit."

Birmingham navigated their way to the Europa League group stage but were eliminated despite registering 10 points against Club Bruges, Maribor and the previous season's finalists Braga.

Hughton juggled Europe brilliantly and guided Blues to the Championship play-offs before leaving for Norwich. Caldwell believes his exit was a major factor in the start of a decline which now sees the club battling to avoid relegation to League One.

"We'd have won the Championship if he stayed," says the Scot. "If you are constantly cutting budgets then inevitably you are going to drop and drop. Eventually the quality of players they were bringing in was dropping and that's why they are where they are."

    The Chris Hughton Rolling Scorecard:

    D**** 1-1 Forest.

A decent performance and a point most would have taken. That we are disappointed not to have won speaks volume of our recent progress under CH.

We kept our shape well in the first half, got our blocks in and got a bit of a lucky break with our goal.

After the break, the higher press was excellent, with good covering and cutting off passing lanes. We looked a threat on the break, even though the end product was lacking and still requires more work.

CH rolls in a par to remain at -1 on the rolling scorecard.

I was looking at the league data before - this should really be done on Sunday when the gameweek is complete.

In the last 13 games, we've added 23 points (6 wins, 5 draws) to our tally (from 17 - 1.77ppg) and we climbed to 14th tonight. In that time we closed that gap between ourselves and 6th place by 16 points

We have 13 games remaining, the gap to 6th is currently 9pts, but could be 12pts after the game week is completed.

On the upside I would say the prospect for our form looks better for the next 13 games than the past 13.

On the downside, collecting 23pts would leave us on 63pts. That would be a very low tally for 6th place, far below Leicester's 68 in 12/13 season which is the lowest to-date against an average of 74. So we'd have to increase our tally to at least 29, which would need 2.2ppg. That looks a tough ask.

But I'd be more than pleased with top 10 finish, and think that looks achievable from here.

    That's the Hughton Effect.

    In the past 15 games we’ve won 7 drawn 6 lost 2 = 27 points 1.8 ppg

    In the previous 15 games we won 3 drew 4 and lost 8 = 13 points 0.87ppg

    That’s quite a turnaround.

And you have to say, it’s pretty much down to the Manager, given the improvement in the Teams‘ play and the players he identified in January.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Very similar to Warbs in that he's got us punching above our weight for minimal outlay.

Just hope we don't sack this one, and lose another 2-3 years chasing our tails.

I'm sure we won't sack this one. Manages players well, spots good players for minimum outlay and is quietly going about his business without offending anyone, I think (don't know what happens behind the scenes).

I'm becoming a big fan. Happy to eat my words.

I bet he was fuming last night. The good thing is he knows full well we need to do much more when we've got the ball, start creating chances and putting them away.
I'm not sure we he could have done much differently, possibly change the left wing earlier to get that elusive second goal but not much else. With the tools he has he's doing well and I'm intrigued to see where he upgrades in the Summer.

When you are mathematically safe from relegation, it will be interesting to see if Hughton manages to motivate players, with next season in mind.

Not forgetting how low in confidence the team looked at the start of the season.

That sort of confidence and relegation form is normally very difficult to turnaround massively in a season once the players are in a downward spiral.

Hughton appears to have worked wonders behind the scenes getting their confidence back too.

The only thing that Hughton hasn’t achieved is to get Lolley and Grabban back to anything approaching their pre lockdown 1 form. In the unlikely event that this could be achieved we really would be a force to reckon with. Currently he has put a temporary sticking plaster over the problem, bringing in Murray and playing Freeman & Mighten since Ameobi has been injured. This issue, I am sure will be top priority to sort in the summer as I can’t see Lolley or Grabban being good enough for the promotion push next season.

    Completely agree.
The short of form and atmosphere surrounding the club in the 20 games that straddled the end of last season and the beginning of this is usually a irrevocable death rattle leading to relegation.

Hughton deserves massive credit for arresting that and turning things around.

Of course he will be able to, you wouldn't play otherwise. The higher the finsh the better it looks on the CV.

As good a job as Hughton is doing in turning our fortunes around we aren't safe from relegation yet

Anyone assuming so clearly hasn't learned the lesson from last season

No. But around this time last season most people on here considered it a given that we'd finish above a certain position in the league, despite us not mathematically having done so. We then capitulated spectacularly and failed to finish above said position.

So let's not assume anything yeah?

    The Chris Hughton Rolling Scorecard:

    Forest 0-1 Luton.

A really poor performance that will have disappointed CH and fans alike.

We're never going to win them all, but this probably serves best as a reminder of just how much work remains to be done.

In fairness, there were aspects of our passing and patterns that looked decent, but we never never quite hit top gear, or looked likely to for that matter.

It all seemed far too passive an effort and the sound of CH yelling about it supposedly being a home game came as no surprise.

Much better will be required individually and collectively in the remaining fixtures.

CH cards a bogey to slip back to level par on the rolling scorecard.
