I was surprised Streets of Rage was missed of the original list.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

My brain was formed when it came out so I had no idea about them. Put on Pc, mod the shit out of it and you have literally one of the best games ever.

Right, whilst I'm fairly housebound I'm gonna play through as many old school games as I can and drop mi thoughts on here, like I'm a 12 year old kid reading Mean Machines & C&VG again.

Would thrive on reading some of your lots opinions on games you thrive on too.

Anyway, gonna start the ball rolling with a fave of mine......

    Golden Axe - Megadrive

It's just flat out fucking brilliant isn't it? There's no such thing as a "perfect" game, but this just does SO much right it's incredible. It's wonderful rip-off of Conan with a bit of high GOT style fantasy thrown in for good measure. The music? Ye gads it's bang on. Each track is an absolutely epic fantasy score, which captures the vibe of the game & fantasy theme superbly.

Then you've the level design. Golden Axe does something which few actual "RPG's" manage to do nowadays, and that's convey the feeling of being on an adventure. The journey feels immense, as you do such things as fight in a village which is situated on the back of a giant turtle, whilst it sails you across the sea. It's great stuff. Each section of the game oozes character and, even though the enemies are very repetitive, the way they are presented in conjunction with the environment & little touches tells it's own little story.

But it's all for nought without good gameplay, and this is damn fine. Again not perfect, but damn fine. You always have to be on your toes and constantly on the move, hit & run, get in first or it's too late, it's top fun. A few too many enemies do fall to cheesy tactics, namely falling to their deaths very easily & being vulnerable to dash attacks. But they are so aggressive themselves, especially with their dash attacks & air attacks too, that it still strikes a great balance overall.

Two player is where the game excels, as there's no end of times you can use teamwork to good effect. You share credits, so said teamwork matters even more, and playing with a bit of a gimp like our lass can be as comical as it is frustrating. Single player is still great, but not as repayable as you can easily find yourself repeating similar patterns throughout several playthroughs.

What's more to say though? It's a fucking classic. An all time classic which is still just as enjoyable now as it was back then, and is probably my number 1 "pick up & play" game of all time.

    Own it now.

    Double Dragon - Master System

^That's it, punch her right in the fucking tit the slag

Another iconic game from my youth, Double D's were legendary amongst us then youth, and we're not just talking about big tits . The arcade version was where it was at, but when this came to the Master System it was one of the games which sold me into getting one.

Returning to it now and, after 30 odd years of quality gaming I shouldn't be enjoying it as much as I am. But I am. Despite sprite flicker being very offputting at times, and there being very little variation in enemy attacks, it does more right than a lot of games 10-20 years later. It's got a surprisingly large array of moves for such an early beat em up, and I was actually more satisfied with them than when playing the recently played Brawl Bros on the SNES. That said, the flying kick is clearly the stand out move, and it's one most folk will end up spamming at some point.

Now it's rare that things such as infinite continues help a game out, but in this game it does. See the action is very "messy", in that you really do just button bash away, a more tactical/thoughtful approach does little, and the opposition often get blows in to you between your blows. It goes against gaming logic, but I guess in a weird way it's more realistic. Real fights are scrappy. So because you've infinite continues you don't really care or get frustrated, you just keep bashing the shit out of things. And here that's fun, and it works.

It looks good, the enemy HP is absolutely spot on so that they feel noteable, but aren't bloated so you get bored, and the short sharp nature of the game (4 levels, taking about 15-25 min to finish) mean it's still a superb dumb button masher to this day. It's as dumb and mashing as these games get, but if you're looking for a way to kill 20min with a mate it's perfect.

Top lad, be great to read about some of your faves

Same goes for Fred & co. Even if I think the game's pants like TW3, I enjoy on getting other people's perspectives on the experience.

    ACTRAISER 2 - SNES

    ^Looks mint, plays wank

As a big fan of the original Actraiser I was looking forward to this. I've played it the odd time on emulator here & there over the years, but never really sat down to give it a proper full playthrough. 30 min later, I can see why.

It's shit. It's not unplayable shit by any means, but it's a real fucking slog. The main dude moves like he's wearing iron boots, you get a shield but it's as useful as a chocolate fireguard, and your multi-directional attacks feel limp.

The enemy patterns are fairly random & carry that old-era trait of coming at you from nowhere without warning and being unavoidable, the bosses are often a case of sacrificing health at the right time, and overall it's just a tough game to love.

On the plus side it looks great, and retains the old sound FX used in the original Actraiser, which were awesome.

A bit gutted tbh, was hoping for a lot more.

My favourite gaming magazine as a kid was Amiga Power. Notorious for not cow-towing to games publishers they were never afraid to say what they thought which resulted in some hilariously scathing reviews, my favourite being for the utter shite that was Dangers Streets on the CD32.

I'll just let the review speak for itself. Enjoy!

    Putt and Putter master system

Whether someone was drunk, stoned or on his way to the mad house i dont know but somebody back in 92 woke up and thought "i wonder what a game mixing Golf and Pinball would look like".... and that bastard child became putt and putter

There are 18 holes in the game that increase in difficulty as the player progresses, with each difficulty having a total of 6 holes.

The aim of the game is to complete all 18 holes without losing all your balls

Holes all have various obstacles including sand traps, moving platforms and pinball style bumpers, most holes are surrounded by water with the resultant entry of the ball ensuring the player receives a one-stroke penalty.

Your lives are represented by balls, put to many balls in the water and its game over.

Sounds daft, looks daft but in general for a pick up and play it just works. Frustrating and fun

    4/5

    Champions of Europe Master sytem

A game about Leeds i hear you say? Nope its the master systems take on Euro 92

Looking very similar to Kick off 2 this game plays as youd expect for a game from that era and a 8 directional D pad with two buttons. Button 1 is tackle and pass, button 2 is shoot with the addition of the directional button to add Roberto Carlos esc curve.

To change formation you have to hold down both buttons after your player has kicked it and that player will announce in a speech bubble the change of formation. One of the highlights was setting the Faroe islands up like Brazil 70 in a 4-2-4 formation and getting at the Germans.

Also to tackle the problem of having to change the language for each country the developers made it so the games teams were all called by their own name in their own language.

So seeing Cymru V Polska play each other in semi finals was not only nice to see the minnows progressing but can also help when wacthing quiz shows in later life on TV.

Another 4/5, fun, easy to pick up, hard to put down.

    Footballer of the year Spectrum

    The aim of the game?

To become footballer of the year of course.

You start the game as a striker in the old 4th division. There is 4 divisions and a dreaded Super league.

Each week you get a wage and it entitles you to buy goal cards, before each game you get a chance to cash in a goal card and be presented with opportunities to score in games.... which you do in a school playground esc Cuppy situation.

The better you are, the more the big clubs and your country come sniffing around. With progress comes a higher wage but more expensive goal cards.

Spend all your wages and blow all your goal cards early in the season and sit out games that could seal your teams destiny.

Each weeks results are played out on a BBC type video printer.

Another game that absolutely smashes it by being so simple,

    Gets my first 5/5

Very good game and in most cases free... Wii was an awesome pick up and play console.
