Default The ascent of Leicester City

As a counterbalance to all the "demise of" threads...

Am I the only one with a horrible, gnawing ache of jealousy every time I see them on MotD? There's more to admire about them now than when they won the league - that was clearly a one-off, whereas what they have now is a sustainable blueprint for challenging at the top end. Not aftertiming, I said all summer that they had a shot at Top 4 this season and, although it's early days, I'm more sure of that than ever.

Obviously, it hurts to say it about that lot, but they do also provide the glimmer of hope that we can get be back where we belong, having a proper go at the aristocrats, at some point in the not too distant future. And when we do, at least we won't need those tin-pot plastic clappers to get an atmosphere up.

All built around the foundation of their captain Wes Morgan.

Mark Arthur, Destroyer of the good, builder of rivals. Could have been us if the Davies-Morgan era foundation was backed not ripped apart by Marthur's ego. Hopefully we've finally made up the ground he lost us at last, and it will be us in a few seasons.

As for the dippers themselves I'm happy to see them doing well. And Sheff U. Ideally I'd like to see the Prem with them, us, and Sheff Wed + Leeds + Derby in it. Bring it all back local and fuck the bullshit clubs like Burnley off.

Certainly jealous of recent success but not of that identikit ground they play at.

Since the new ownership took over they’ve done very well, and they’ve built up the Club the proper way with a plan and a strategy that works.

    Fair play to them.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Weren’t they in breach of FFP when promoted in 2014

Not sure that’s been officially proven, and anyway, as we all know, FFP is a load of bollocks.

I think it’s similar to QPR (not the same level obviously) where they’ll get nailed when they get relegated

I wonder if they ever paid back the local businesses who went pop when Leicester went into admin

Nope, many are quick to forget they left people out of pocket to the tune of £30M when they went into administration. They put local businesses out of business, they owed the local ambulance service significant amounts of money, that crisp bowl they play in wasn't actually paid for as they gave the contractors a fuck you for £5.5M.

Hardly something I'd ever be envious of.

No matter what they achieve they will never be our rivals. That will always hurt them no matter how many trophies they win.

We probably would be if we could just fuck £30M of debt off and carry on as though nothing happened.

    Guilty as anything.

They are a fine example of how to be a sustainable Premier League Club.

Pity they originally got there by being one of the biggest cheats in the history of football.

I've boycotted their games since they changed their name from Leicester Fosse.

Good they have built something, their title winning year was a flash in the pan, but they have kept the core of the side around enough (Schmeichel, Morgan, Vardy) to be able to build a squad around them and also replace the Mahrez/Kante etc who have inevitably moved on.

They probably should have kept Ranieri to start off with, but even after a fair amount of silliness with managers (not sure Shakespeare, Puel etc were ever going to take them on) Brendan Rodgers is clearly a good move for them having done reasonably well at Swansea and Liverpool.

There is after all a fair difference between a side who comes up, just manages to stay up and then win the league by continuing the good form which kept them up for long enough in the season whilst keeping much of the squad which did well in the Championship, at that point they were still a fair way off being long term top-6 contenders.

It takes a fair amount to break the monopoly of Man City/Spurs/Liverpool (and currently to a lesser extent Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea) in recent years and they havent, nor has anyone else...

Don’t really think of Lester as a football town, always been more of a rugby kind of place.

And a new £80m training ground. Good recruitment strategy. Good manager. Play good football.

I’m jealous. Definitely the club to aspire to.

They aren’t our rivals, but only like Derby weren’t our rivals when we were winning European Cups. Liverpool were. Why would they be bothered about a second division club at the moment.

THE TRUTH IS THERE AND WITH IT I GO TO THE END OF THE WORLD .

I'm sure they're enjoying their time in the sun at the moment, but Forest to me is more about the result on a weekend and more about the identity of what I associate the club with. It hurt more to have our name dragged through the mud by Fawaz than it did did going down and being completely godawful on the pitch under Meggo.

If I was a Leicester fan I'd still be embarrassed about the club screwing over folk from my city.

Edit: That aside they're a decent team and likely to finish top six this year.

30/09/2021: It's only 8 points to the play-offs. Doesn't matter if we're 20th having lost three times as many games as we've won so far. I fancy us now that Hughton's gone.

    Utter bollox.

This club cheated too and completely ignored ffp. The only difference is Leicester weren’t run by a clown and successfully got promoted.

And all the attempts to take the moral high ground because of something that happened nearly 20 years ago under previous owners. As if that has any real relevance to the current respective positions of the two clubs. Maybe people should look a bit closer to home, to the morally bankrupt shitshow of a glasshouse that this club was under Fawaz before throwing stones.

    It certainly sounds like envy.
