„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Apparently the explosives fella didn't know Keith had already loaded up the bass drum with more than was required. The funny bit is Entwistle guarding his bass.

Genuine question from someone born in the 80s - why was smashing things up considered really cool in the 70s? They just look like arseholes to me. The bloke with the guitar can’t even break it properly.

I don't know, even local bands did it. Usually with a cheap fake hidden behind the amp. This episode was said to have inspired Hendrix to start setting fire to his guitars. Bands in those days smashed everything up from guitars to hotels it was like a who (excuse the pun) can be the most outrageous.
I was not so pleased when my own mother joined in this ritual. She had bought me a cheap spanish guitar back from a holiday she'd had with my step dad. I'd sat in the front room with it, plunk plonk plink plonk. My mother never being one to tell anyone twice to shut up came in after the first warning snatched it out my hand and busted it over my head. Never put me off guitars though.

When The High Numbers, later renaming themselves The Who, started out, they played at the Railway Hotel on a stage under a low ceiling. One night, performing an extravagant move with the guitar, Townshend stuck the headstock through the ceiling. To cover his embarrassment and make it look like it was deliberate he continued making the hole bigger then smashed his guitar. The performance went down a storm and kind of fitted with the mod art image so he did it again next night and soon it became a regular feature in the act, expected by the audience and copied by other bands.

When I went to New York, Daltrey was appearing in the pantomime a Christmas Carol at Madison square garden which I didn't think was very rock n roll.

    Oh yes it was!

Your palms are holding her neck and thumbs are at her ears regulating the speed of her head as she swallows and then sucks up your machinery. She is topping up your engine oil for the cross-country coming up. Your RPM is hitting a new high. To wait any longer would be to lose prime time... She picks up a Bugatti's momentum. You want her more at a Volkswagen's steady trot. Squeeze the maximum mileage out of your gallon of gas. But she's eating up the road with all cylinders blazing.
