As I suspected, you lot spend some coin on your headphones!

Thanks for the relies. I'll see how I get on with the ones I ordered and maybe price compare some of the ones mentioned if I'm not happy.

Really depends on how much you use them. It's worth paying a bit more for a decent sounding pair that will last if you use them every day.

I use my Beats studios for about an hour every day, when I commute into the office via train. I like my music, and having a comfortable pair of ‘phones with decent sound quality, was my priority.

We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

I use mine every day and each pair never lasts much more than a year ! So I am loathed to spend too much on a pair.

The perils of having a massive head, I guess

Sounds like your head may be expanding. May I recommend curbing your learning Professor?

I use mine to watch telly when the missus wants to sit and read and not be distracted. Needed something comfortable, and they were about the most comfy I could find having tried on loads of different ones.

Back in the days when I was flying 100,000 miles plus a year I used a pair of Bose Quiet comfort. They were great for that purpose but I did find with the noise cancellation the mids and highs were a bit 'clipped'.

HD 25 SP for the over ear, you can replace to cable when it gets dodgy too. pretty flat and really detailed.

I have Beats Bluetooth in the ear for when I’m at the gym. Never had any issues with them.

Good quality sound, charge lasts for days and I can jiggle without distortion.

I’ve bought cheaper ones in the past and always been disappointed.

    Buy cheap buy twice.

I think 'odd' is a good thing. Oddness shows originality, uniqueness and a desire to be different from the masses. Oddness is, maybe, only deemed 'odd' by the majority who are considered less odd but only by their own blinkered observations and understanding. Oddness should never be criticised but be encouraged to nurture, develop individualism and to explore the mind rather than conform to expectation and 'normality'. Many of the world's greatest works of art and prose were born from those minds many considered to be 'odd'.

I do a lot of work with headphones. Most of our product is consumed on headphones. I'm in Wilmington, North Carolina for the last few days with an headphone manufacturer who are hoping to licence our technology into their future product. They make headphones/earphones for premium brands.

All the research says the mass of choice is for flat response. The industry go-to-research is a series of blind tests by Harman-Kardon, who own a few brands inc AKG. Even with consumers who express a preference for bass-y response, when given blind choice they choose flat-response. There's a reason for this, its called evolution - and how the auditory system evolved from a breathing apparatuus to a sensory system.

But one of the really important features of headphone is the impedance-dynamic range measure. Yet no-one mentions this above. This site has a good evaluation framework https://www.headphone.com/pages/evaluating-headphones

Also, if you're paying > £50 for cans and wiring them to your smartphone, the weak link in your audio chain is your Digital Audio Converter chip, which probably cost $0.25. Do you think it's audiophile?

And there is no Bluetooth with lossless compression. When you pay £250 for your BT devices, your not really paying for audio quality - every device is correcting the audio post-transmission. There is always loss and artefact/distortion. Always.

If you want audiophile experience, spend some of your cash on high-sample rate external DAC. You'll really hear your headphone's capability then.

I have lots a pairs for different use case, here's my main pairs

    - in the studio, I wear Beyer DT-990 pro. They cost just over £100. I could spend £1000s but wouldn't get 10x increase in performance or comfort or build. Supplemented by Sony MDR-z1000 (admittedly much more expensive) and Sennheiser hd25-2.

    - for on-street use, i wear wired in-ear NC20s from AKG. Again in the £100 for reference-class earphones. You can pay more, but you're into marginal gains... if you're out and about... the crunch of your Skelton and cartledge is is louder than those gains.

    - comfort listening, like on the plane, I wear Sony MDR-1000x... they're coming at at £400. I paid that much money for comfort and noise-cancellation, of which there is no comparable model imho, not for audio quality.

For most people £30 should be a good listening experience, and at that price point, you choose from comfort or style.

I’ve got a pair of V Moda headphones that are supposedly indestructible.

If you can break them they’ll apparently replace them for free. I’ve never had chance to test this out, though, as I generally wear them whilst doing the hoovering.

    What model do you have?

Also, anyone with money to born the V Mode Versa is probably the best high resolution player for outdoor use. £500 is step but if you want to listen to the Cincinnati Philharmonic playing Handle while your out mountain biking thiscis the player.
