The difference with a super league though, is that the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool never considered for a minute that they’d ever get relegated out of the PL.
It’s a different kettle of fish with a European super league. There have been times in the last 20 years when big clubs have been hopelessly behind their rivals in Europe.
Without bottom of the league fodder like Palace, Newcastle and Brighton to beat up every so often, the prospect of an Inter Milan, Arsenal or Atletico type team getting relegated out of the money league is very real and something none of those teams would sign up for without the guarantee of a closed shop.
Fans in Asia and the US don’t give two shits about promotion and relegation. They just want to watch Barca vs Man Utd every week (and probably “support” both teams). They are the audience here, because there’s more of them, and they rely on TV (so the money from TV deal is huge). Clubs don’t give a fuck about John from Islington who can’t afford to take his kid to watch Arsenal, when you’ve got 18 million “fans” in China paying £14.99 a month to watch them on telly.
Then they will start playing games all round the world or kick off at silly times to placate foreign audiences.
Football has always been about having the most money, but this Euro league talk is just greed to the nth degree. No wonder the Yank owners are all over it, they love creating obscene wealth to the detriment of everything and everyone else.
As you can probably tell, I’m not in favour of it. But if it happened, I don’t think I’d watch it at all. The sheer number of CL games currently plus the cost of BT Sport already turns me off the CL as it is. It’s not like Forest would be there anyway
