A typical start of season. Our only no 10 out with ACL. Our new striker out for two months. Our new goalkeeper just bought, so we played with our (very good) backup goalie, who is 18. Just hours before the game our main striker is out with coronavirus (for the second time!), along with our main CB. Our main holding midfielder out, hours before the match, with a strained muscle. Bouchalakis got injured early in the match. Mady Camara scored a great goal and then got a deserved red card for a stupid tackle. Our new midfielder lacks match fitness and had to be replaced.

All these are signs we will have a great season.

Is that Fortounis out with an ACL? I've always rated him, classy player.

Don't you have 8 or 9 African players in your side these day? I wonder how the African Cup of Nations this winter will effect your squad?

Never mind though, I think you only really have to beat one team to win the league again.

I look forward to watching some good European nights with you guys again this season.

Greece is having its worst heatwave since 1987, with more than a week with temperatures over 40. In the last couple of days there have been huge fires in various areas, including one north of Athens.

We are playing against Ludogorets this evening, and the forecast for 10 at night when we play is 40 degrees. I don't see how football can be played in such a temperature. I can't stand more than two minutes in my balcony and the players are supposed to play an important match, running around for 90 minutes? And yet I'm sure UEFA will not give a damn, and will demand that the match goes on as planned.

Oh yes, 1987, the only time I've been to Greece, in August as well, just about every day for 2 weeks over 40 degrees. Memories of a day trip to Athens from Loutraki, whole day spent trying to stay in the shade.

We're seeing more and more of these odd weather events. Sportsmen will have to train in special heated chambers as a matter of routine soon.

Here in my part of Mexico we get high 30's to low 40's for months on end, some days in the low 50's with the heat index. Nothing much happens during the day, games are played at night and work starts before sunrise.

I know in many regions of Spain it is illegal to build anything in the summer months due to heat.

UEFA has always been all about money, nothing else. If it keeps insisting top level games are played in those conditions there will be a fatality. Yes the players are very fit, but running around in that heat competing at what that level demands with 3% body fat is a recipe for serious trouble.

I like the looks of the Europa League group, should be able to advance from that.

With Sa leaving for Wolves, how is Vaclik settling in between the sticks?

He's only played two games, so it's hard to tell. Calm, composed and with excellent distribution, so far. I very much like our second keeper (19-year-old Kostantis Tzolakis), who played in the first qualifying matches, and even our third keeper (veteran Ögmundur Kristinsson from Iceland). Both will probably play in a significant number of matches, if the rumours are true that Vaclík has an issue with his knees which will not allow him to play twice a week all season long.

The Europa League group is OK. The fact that we were disqualified from the Champions League may be a blessing in disguise, because that competition becomes more and more a closed club for the ultra-rich. EM got angry for losing about 20m from the disqualification, but as far as European success is concerned, it may be for the better to compete at our level.

Rúben Semedo, one of the most talented CBs I have ever seen, but notoriously devoid of a brain, hence his legal troubles in the past (he has been jailed in Spain for a number of serious offences, and got out on bail), has been arrested, along with the manager of a rapper, for the rape of a 17-year-old girl yesterday. The incident allegedly took place at his home. The guy is married with two young daughters.

God splashes talent on the wrong people far too often.

Such a clown. He’s a class player but an absolute moron by the sounds of it.

As does Ruud Gullitt and Frank Rijkaard.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Weird trivia: the end of the transfer window leaves us with four currently international players of Guinea: midfielder Mady Camara was, strangely enough, not sold, midfielder Mamadou Kane was bought and sent on loan, the exciting young attacking midfielder Aguibou Camara was bought for the U23 but is already a starter in the first team, and 18-year-old striker Algassime Bah is waiting for his chance. And last year we barely missed on a fifth Guinean international, left back Issiaga Sylla who was a transfer target for weeks.

Another summer where Mady Camara was not sold, contrary to all expectations, because we ask for a very steep price (upwards of 17m euros). But I'm afraid it will be much more difficult to hold on to the younger Camara, Aguibou, aged 20. In his first year of professional football (he was part of Lille's second team), he's getting better every match, and gave a stunning performance on Thursday, in our emphatic win over Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. Incredible technique, great stamina, excellent in interceptions and pressing, good field vision and passing game.

One more gem unearthed by François Modesto, who may have failed over there but has been great over here.
