Well worth a listen if you're at all interested in Biology. Merlin Sheldrake author of 'Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Futures' talking about the politics and philosophy of fungi. Fascinating stuff, and Merlin comes across as a really fun guy.

A podcast of two halves. First, an overview of astropysics and quantum theory followed by the question of whether the first interstellar object observed in the solar system is the product of an alien civilisation.

60 years ago today, this man embraced his colleague German Titov, climbed aboard his Vostok craft, and made history as the first man in to space.

    Bravo, Comrade Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin.

    Поехали!

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

And apparently the cost - if it comes in at budget - will be about 13% of the Apollo missions!

That's right because the economics of the first attempt were astronomical but footed by the tax payer.

This is the point that Mazzacuto is always making about the (lack of an) Entrepreneurial State. The state makes the big leaps forward, which companies like SpaceX eventually get to exploit. Then they win big government contracts and avoid paying taxes on any profits.

In other news this week, Microsoft signed a $22bn to supply the DoD with its Hololens2 technology and associated services for mixed reality.

The core technology was developed by the DoD 20 years ago. Another company GDG, patented the government's research. Microsoft acquired GDG so it could own the patents. Licences the patent back to DoD.

    It's an incredible wheeze.

    EXACT SAME BENEFITS

30 seconds of flight but all stages went as planned. An incredible moment.

An autonomous flight using statistical modelling to understand what would be necessary to fly a chopper on the Mars in its weak atmosphere.

    Experts, eh?

FFS we can fly helicopters on Mars but we can't create a bag of pasta that doesn't split all the way down the side when you open it

You want her more at a Volkswagen's steady trot. Squeeze the maximum mileage out of your gallon of gas. But she's eating up the road with all cylinders blazing.
