Did they just choose the one that gave most people heartburn? That’s what the krauts like isn’t it?

Default La Liga/Serie A/Bundesliga/Ligue Un & other World Football Thread

My local side are playing in an oddly-formatted preseason tournament in Austria, with 30-minute matches.

After drawing 1-1 with the dirty scousers, they’re currently 1-0 up against the splendidly-named Wacker Innsbruck.

Wacker also managed a 1-1 draw against the English side.

    No, me neither.

I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

If you ever find yourself in Stuttgart, walking down Mercedesstraße past the Mercedes-Benz Arena, just before you reach the clubs‘ offices, you’ll come to the team‘s reserves-stadium, the Robert Schlienz Stadion.

    But who was Robert Schlienz?

Well, a man whose life was that colourful, you could make a movie out of it:

I note he was born in the Weimar Republic. As a lad, just after the last war, I started collecting stamps and any mixed bag of stamps would certainly contain several stamps from Germany of that time, but overprinted to values of millions of marks due to the hyper-inflation they were suffering.

That was just a random thought whilst reading about Robert, who I thought was jolly lucky not to suffer a leg amputation as well. Though he seems such a character that he'd probably have laughed that off, too!

Round of 16 in Copa Sudamericana is complete. 1 match left in Libertadores that will be played next week.
-Libertad of Paraguay lost 0-1 at home to Junior of Colombia but go through on away goals, 4-4 aggregate.
-Independiente draw with Santos at home and Santos go through 2-1 on aggregate.
-Rosario Central beat Tachira 3-2 on aggregate.
-Red Bull Bragantino beat Independiente del Valle 3-1 aggregate.
-LDU Quito win at Gremio 1-2 to go through on away goals.
-Atletico Paranaense beat America de Cali 5-1 on aggregate.
-Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Cristal. Sporting go through 3-2 on aggregate.
-In the Montevideo Derby, Nacional win 0-1 at Penarol to make it 2-2 on aggregate but Penarol go through on away goals. It was business as usual with a couple of sending offs (see highlights) but the referee looks like the Hulk.

The 2. Bundesliga returns this weekend; and the fixtures kick-off on Friday evening as usual with what in recent years would have been a top-flight fixture - Schalke 04 against Hamburger SV.

Should be a cracker; two sides absolutely desperate for promotion. Kick off is 2030CET/1930UK.

Hmmm. Welcome to the 2. Bundesliga, Schalke 04.

    It’s ended S04, 1 - HSV 3

Die Königsblauen might have a steep learning curve in this division.

This will be their fourth. Der Dinos have struggled since relegation, coming close (fourth place) but not good enough.

With Werder Bremen and Schalke down there also this season, competition will be tough, again.

    Don't worry, Hamburg.

You might be in Germany, but to me you'll always be up their as one of my favourite places.

This is what I’ve enjoyed about Der Dinos being in the second-Tier; proper Hamburg Derbies!

Theres absolutely no love lost between the fans of both clubs, and the contest has seen some banging matches in the last three years. Die Freibeuter der Liga are always up for it against their supposed bigger neighbours.

    Curva Sud's annual pool party.

Maybe something similar can be sorted for the LB? Weekend in Brid perhaps?

Good goal from Jonny Russell for SKC in the MLS. I wonder if he regrets leaving Derby.

THE TRUTH IS THERE AND WITH IT I GO TO THE END OF THE WORLD .
