Copa Libertadores Semifinal 2nd leg
Palmeiras 0-2 River Plate (3-2 aggregate) After winning 0-3 at El Monumental in Buenos Aires, Palmeiras almost blew it at home but held on. River probably have every right to feel hard done by in this one. Some very questionable decisions went against them.

Absolute scenes at the Holstein-Stadion in Kiel; in the DFB Pokal, second-tier Holstein Kiel have knocked out holders FC Bayern on penalties!
The match ended 2-2 after a 95th minute Kiel equaliser, and with no further scoring in the extra time period, it went to spot kicks, Kiel prevailing, 6-5.
It was a strong Bayern team out there as well, Neuer, Kimmich, Müller, Lewandowski, Sane, Gnabry all featured.
A massive upset!
„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“
„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

Bundesliga weekend starts tonight, with Union Berlin entertaining Bayer Leverkusen at Der Stadion am der Altern Försterei.
Urs Fischer has done a magnificent job there, in only Union‘s second-ever Bundesliga season, Die Eisernen currently sit in fifth place, but face a tough test against Die Werkself, who are third.
Champions FC Bayern had a real wobble last week, losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach, 3-2, after being 2-0 up, and in midweek, losing to second-tier Holstein Kiel on penalties in the Cup. Hansi Flick was not impressed, and will demand more from his side on Sunday, when they face SC Freiburg at Home.
Game of the weekend though is Saturday evening, when VfB Stuttgart face Mönchengladbach at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Two aggressive, attacking sides lock horns in what should be a lively encounter. The two will meet again also in two weeks, having been drawn together in the next round of the DFB Pokal.
A little bit of VfB history could happen too - if Die Schwaben manage to find the net on Saturday, it will be their 3.000th goal in the Bundesliga!
Union 1, Leverkusen 0, a deflected goal in the 87th minute from substitute Cedric Teuchert is the difference, after Union earlier hit a post.
Union up to Fourth, and in the Champions League places, ahead of Dortmund on goals scored, and a point behind Leverkusen in third. What a job Urs Fischer is doing with Die Eisernen !
I mentioned in an earlier post, the chance of VfB notching-up their 3.000th Bundesliga goal in the game against Mönchengladbach.
And it came, thanks to a frankly superb diving header from Argentine Forward Nicolas Gonzalez, a goal well worthy of that particular milestone:
The match finished 2-2, Silas Wamangituka scoring a 95th minute penalty-kick to snatch a draw, that was throughly deserved for the boys from Bad Cannstatt.
16 League Matches played go far, and Gonzalez and Wamangituka have scored 15 times in those games, an impressive haul.
Copa Sudamericana Semifinals, 2nd leg:
Lanus 3-0 Velez Sarsfield (aggregate 4-0) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00UT...feature=onebox
Defensa y Justicia 4-2 Coquimbo Unido (aggregate 4-2) Braian Romero with the hat trick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4mT...feature=onebox
Defensa y Justicia will play Lanus in the final Sat., 23 Jan. at Estadio Mario Kempes, Cordoba.
Footballing shambles FC Shalke 04, in complete contravention of the old don‘t have sex with your ex missive, have apparently re-signed their former hero, 37-year old Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Ajax.
They’re hoping he can provide the goals to get them out the bottom two. He’s going to be available for their next match, an absolute six-pointer against 1. FC Köln, with Die Geißböcke themselves hovering just above the drop zone.
Gladbach being robbed of two points by VAR at the weekend seems to have been missed.
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
So in Italy, rumours abound of a Merda Rebrand. The club have denied they will be changing the name to Inter Milano, whilst the leak badge has the whiff of competition winner about it (and not the bright lad who designed the forest badge either).
Juventus are not very good at all and football fans worldwide can tune into their matches just for Ronald's sad face.
As for the mercato, the big move seem to be Milan bringing Mario Mandzukic back to Italy and handing him the ' cursed' number 9.
Also.......Campione D'inverno!!

Bundesliga Transfer News:
FC Bayern defender David Alaba has agreed a pre-contract to move to Real Madrid in the summer as a free agent. The Austrian has reportedly signed a four-year deal with Los Blancos, worth €230.000 a week, after tax.
He rejected three separate contract extension offers to take up the Madrid offer. Alaba can play at Centre Back or Left Back.
This now raises suspicion that the Bavarians will move for RB Leipzig Central Defender Dayot Upamecano; the Frenchman - long a favourite of mine - has been the best young defender in the Bundesliga over the last season or two, and is tipped to move in the summer, with (apparently) the scousers and Man United also interested, so maybe expect a bidding war. It is likely that any fee would eclipse the €35m Bayern paid VfB Stuttgart for Benjamin Pavard.
If you had the choice of picking a goal for your 3.000th in the Bundesliga, it would probably look something like this one:

Massive, massive result for Bayer Leverkusen tonight, beating Dortmund 2-1 at home.
Coach Peter Bosz was ecstatic at the Final whistle; not only for guiding Die Werkself to victory over his former club - from where he’d been perhaps unjustly dismissed - but also breaking a horrendous streak of five losses in seven games for his side against Die Schwarzgelb.
Leverkusen up to second in the table, but Dortmund stay fourth, crucially though, they’re now seven points behind current leaders Bayern, having played a game more, and Wolfsburg, Union, Gladbach and Eintracht are within three points of them, and with Union and Eintracht having a game in hand, Dortmund need to get some results and quick, otherwise they could drop out of the European places.
A proper Friday-night banger from the Bundesliga tonight, as seventh-place Borussia Mönchengladbach face fourth-place Borussia Dortmund, to kick off the Rückrunde (second half of the season).
Die Fohlen will be hoping to leap-frog Dortmund and consolidate a European place, whereas Die Schwarzgelb, who are really wobbling at the moment despite all their attacking talents, must win to keep any remote title-chances alive. This match is on BT Sport, if you have that.
Other highlights; Saturday sees third-plays-fifth as Leverkusen face Wolfsburg, with Die Werkself hoping to continue their decent recent form under Peter Bosz, to keep up the pressure on Bayern and Leipzig at the top, and there‘s the Baden-Württembergische derby, as Stuttgart travel to face Freiburg; Die Schwaben are boosted by the return from suspension of attacking duo Nicolas Gonzalez and Silas Wamangituka, who’ve bagged fifteen goals between them already this term.
Sunday, and Schalke 04, with just one win all season, are at home to Bayern; whilst this might seem a foregone conclusion, the Bavarians have not looked at all themselves of late.
On current form I've got Mönchengladbach to beat Dortmund tonight.
Former direby legend Fikayo Tomori joins the rossoneri on loan.

Very odd refereeing here.
Cracker of a game so far, VAR controversy, loads of end-to-end attacking play, and Erling Håland scores again to make it 1-1!
It had to be him, again!
1-2, Erling is on Fire!
