If there is any one out there who has never rated Prince as a virtuoso guitarist just watch this (all the way through)

If there is anyone out there who has never rated Prince as a virtuoso guitarist, then they are an idiot!

    He was a phenomenal player.

I remember watching that in the wake of Prince dying (can it really be 5 years ago?!!), watched it a couple of times this week after the 'directors cut' made it go viral again.

First time I saw it I never even saw him on stage until he steps forward to start his solo, but he is there all the time in the shadows. I love the way he throws his guitar up in the air and struts off at the end.

Supremely talented bloke, awesome performer, and fantastic guitarist, but wouldn't have him as a "virtuoso" tbh.

    It's a great vid.

I managed to find this for £200, which I don’t think was a bad price.

Just utilising my day off with a spot of instrument learning. Do any of you have any advice on how to get your left hand fingers used to stretching? (All jokes aside) I'm struggling to get my pinky down to the 5th fret whilst my index stays on the second. Do I just practice moving the whole hand instead? (Playing banjo bluegrass style)

Practice arpeggios and scales, will both help.

I was lucky in that I played the piano before guitar which really gets your span going.

However and I am quite prepared to be laughed at but there are these two quid things on wish and allegedly I am told that they have helped some people. At £2 might be worth a try but please don't blame me if your fingers turn blue and drop off my sources on this are third hand.

Take a look at some of the one finger per fret bass tuition on YouTube. Altering the angle of your elbow and position of your thumb on the neck can make a hell of a difference. Mark J Smith on talking bass and Janek Gwizdala have some good ideas on this stuff whilst avoiding injuries which can easily happen if you force stuff.

Get hands like a guy I used to work with, he could span to the seventh no problem, bloody good player too, really annoying.

I gave up because my left wrist (I broke it in several places as a teenager) just wouldn't work and was painful unless the neck was near my head. The picture of that span helper thing and the bend in the wrist is painful to look at.

I think banjo players find the big stretches hard due to the webbing between their fingers...

I used to find warm ups good for stretching, I got used to playing something like

    1-2-3-4
    1-2-4-5
    1-3-5
    5-3-1
    5-4-2-1
    4-3-2-1

Doing that got me used to stretching as well picking up scales quite easy.

And then obviously mixing it up with different strings and etc. Missing a string out, going down the fretboard on one string, going up it on another. Sounds awful but once I had that muscle memory I felt much better for it.
