    Default Dead PS3 Repair?

My PS3 kicked the bucket over Easter. Seems I wasn't missing out on PSN, but anyway. My brother sent his back to Sony when his died, cost him £120 I think.

Anyone know a local company that can repair them? I found these in Carlton off Yell.com ...

My brother says Sony don't recover your saved games or anything, which is toss.

That makes me wonder if maybe sending it back to Sony is actually the best thing to do.

Do you have the 'yellow light of death'? There are various fixes you can try yourself if you're semi-confident in your skills that I can post. Assuming you're out of warranty now might be a time to ring them and explain you're problem, and suggest with the problems affecting the PSN you're not only worried about your credit card details but thinking a switch to an xbox might be prudent unless they can come up with a decent offer.....

I didn't notice a yellow light, although Googling turned up lots of mention of that.

It just beeps then goes to a flashing red light, something like that.

I had this problem last week. You pressed the 'on' button, it looked like it was turning on, then a yellow light flashed once followed by three beeps and then back to the red light. If yours does that it's the yellow light of death.

Got mine fixed at a place in South Normanton in Derbyshire. They had pretty good reviews on their website, but after I paid £60 for the repair I took it back and it still didn't work. Took it back to them, and they re-repaired it and I've just got back with it today. Seems to be working ok.

The good reviews makes me think this was a one off, and they seemed to be pretty good about it. You get a same day fixing too, which is ideal.

    http://www.xbox360repairservices.com/playstation-3/ is their website

This happened to me last year, I got mine fixed for about £50 at a place in Top Valley called D&D Tech Repairs. It was fixed & back to normal but 10 days or so later it did it again but luckily I managed to back all my save games up anyway & he gave me a refund & I bought a new 250GB Slimline PS3 which doesn't suffer from YLoD.

I'm thinking this might be the way to go, try to fix it enough to get the saved games off it. I think I'm going to try BigHeartSmallPenis' play and moan about my leaked credit card details and see if I can get discount of Sony.

EDIT: Tried it, they told me to bollocks, it's £130 or keep the PS3 as a paper weight. I dunno, I might try and fix it myself then, if it goes again, I'll have a backup and just buy a PS3 Slim.

They do, but not as widely yet!

Well, I've put my trusty PS3 on for sale. If anyone knows where I can get a good deal on a PS3 slim, do tell!

eBay it, somebody bought mine for about £60 even though it was a door stop to me, they took the Blueray drive out and dumped it I believe.

Anyway, I put that to the cost of the cheapest new one I could find. Worked out well.

My brother meanwhile sent his back to Sony, started playing again, only to have that die again a just outside the new warranty. Fuck that.

I've booked a repair with an independent. Chose between £69 with a 3 month guarantee or some dodgy local bloke for £35 with no guarantee. Went for the former. Might live to regret it, but so be it.

What is it with technology these days that it always needs bloody fixing? My bloody SNES still works and that's 19 years old with about 15 years of dust on it.

Make sure you keep it cool. Don't put it on or under anything else. Buy a fan. It's the heat more times than not that kills them, so i'm told.

I've ordered a new Slim PS3. Don't regret getting the old one fixed as want to try to get my saved data off it anyways.
