Sometimes mansfield red joins in when he's feeling man enough :-p plus we need people to come up with topics we can hijack lol
I'll start though for mr hulk. A movie takes 50 million in the first week, less 25% which is 37.5. In the following 2 weeks it takes 60 million, less 40% which is 36 million. Giving a combined total of 73.5. Now if said movie cost 100million to make including marketing (which seems unlikely) it is still 26.5 million short of being in profit....
Well I apologise to mansfield red for not including him in the title, if someone can tell me how I will correct my error.
Sorry mansfield, forgive me?
Nah. No need to be sorry at all. I just post when I feel I have a point anyway.
Ooo now that was a dig
You might as well delete this thread and just rename the 'PS3/XBOX360 Recommendation Thread' to 'The Incapable Hulk, TrickyTart and sometimes adam09 debating thread'.
Jesus, some of the crap that goes on in there is barely legal.
Woah woah woah. Marshall, dont you be coming into this thread with that tone of voice
Barely legal? Have you been reading your dads porn again?
TrickyTart and Hulk, I think you are mixing up the two in your little debate. It depends on how you come at it. Here's how I think it works:
A movie, by definition, is said to have bombed if it takes in less money world wide than it cost to make it. This doesn't factor in where the money goes to. So in your example, Tricky, if a movie costs $100million dollars (which sometimes include marketing costs worldwide, but not always) and it takes in $115million in box-office sales then the movie cannot be classified as a bomb, but a success. That's a very basic definition of the difference between a box-office success and a bomb.
However, when it comes to those who took the punt on releasing the movie that's where it starts to get a little complicated. Generally about 40-45% of box-office figures are snaffled up by the cinema's/theatre's that show the movies, the rest returns to the company that released/made the movie as a sort of renting fee. For a movie to be successful to that company then you start to take into consideration the reduction that the cinema/theatre take out.
I want to get involved.
TrickyTart is a console fanboy. Or Fangirl.
Or whatever.

I am not a console fangirl!! I like them all in their own ways and dislike them too. I can be a developer fangirl though.....I also never claimed the movie bombed. I was just reporting back what I'd read, though if you're currently 30-50million in the red that doesn't sound like much else but a bomb.....
Fair enough, I will give you that.
However, it's still not considered to be have bombed though if the box office gross is more than the cost of the movie, and that is taken from a world wide stand point.
There are other factors though in play for the developer/publisher of the movie. Things like merchandise connected with said movie or DVD sales.
Waterworld, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Catwoman, Battlefield Earth are all Box Office bombs.
As a side note, the worst bomb I can seem to find is something called Zyzzyx Road. It had a budget of $2mill and only grossed a staggering $30 in box office sales. Something like 3 people must have ever gone to see it.
The operative word is "CURRENTLY". Your jumping the gun. Its only been out for 3 weeks in one major market and a handful of other countries. It doesnt make worldwide release for another 3 weeks. Factor in dvd sales.
The crappy punisher movie is a shining example of these basic economics, as it only made $55 million dollars in total at the box office, but then made $60 million in dvd sales almost straight away.
If the a team movie had been out for over year and had only earned this much, then yeah- it would be classified as a bomb. But its only been out in the cinema for 3 weeks, in a handful of countries- with it yet to open in some of its biggest markets.
Thats the crucial distinction you seem to refuse to acknowledge. It has not bombed YET.
I'll acknowledge that when you do that it isn't in profit as you asserted....
Yeah and you don't understand what profit is. I'll keep trying. Something costs you a pound. You give it to the shop keeper. The shop keeper sells it for a pound but only gives you back 60p. How exactly has a profit been made? It's really simple. Mansfield understands that too. I think everybody does but you. I said before it hasn't yet made a profit. I said before i didn't call it a bomb, i read that it was.....you can keep fighting as per usual but you're wrong plain and simple. Dont ever go into business. Again i offered to draw a line under it and say we both erred but you cant, your arrogance is colossal.
Dearie me, you just dont know when to stop. This is why I always end up arguing with you, because your just so bloody condescending for an 18 year old.
Im not arrogant, any more than your overly aggressive and on a constant ego trip.
If you really cant do anything other than make bitchy little digs, and snide comments. to try and "win"- shoot for it. I wouldnt want to mess with your sense of self importance.
I have no problems with the maths. I keep saying I get that. Over and over again. But your focusing repeatedly on that to make me look stupid- i get that.
Are you that insecure? How many times can i say "I understand what your saying, but your pulling hypothetical numbers off of a movie blog you found on google. And presenting those as a fact".
Plus, the only thing im really arguing here is your assertion that the movie has bombed already, because it doesnt compare to the karate kid and twilight. Is this something your really failing to grasp? I mean come on, I know you've just recently finished school- but that doesnt take a masters degree to comprehend.
Again, I'd rather just let it go- but you have to keep making personal little digs and you know full well I'll react. I just cant do it anymore, I give up...you win
Seriously, every conversation with you is just too draining for me.
Its like talking to a female napoleon.

What about those 'straight to DVD' movies?
Are they just unexploded bombs?
Highlight to me where you said you were wrong and I'll apologise. Check the previous time we 'discussed' it was me that bowed out because you just cant ever let anything go. Its the same as always. You have to be right, unfortunately i'm as pig headed as you sometimes. I keep telling you i didn't claim it bombed, i just said what i'd read. You decided to declare it had actually made a profit when it simply hadn't. Nor did you make clear exactly what the term bombed meant. I just assumed it meant it had done poorly. Hence me not understanding what you were on about. I didn't know there was an official definition till mansfield explained. Hence the examples of the other movies to contrast what had done well and what hadn't....as always you'd rather war than discuss, it's not me with the complex :-) nor did i present the % as fact, i talked about whats on average taken and stated it varied from movie to movie. If you know better show me....but you dont you just want to fight. You're a bully and isn't it little men who have the napoleon complex ;-)
You two probably shouldn't ever get married.
Also, do you ever sleep?
Im lucky enough to have a girlfriend who doesnt want marriage....if she ever did I think I'd be on the run like jason bourne
Rogue- van damme and segal make straight to dvd movies, thus they are awesome
I meant to each other.
How about internet only pay site movies... you know the sort. How do you gauge if they have bombed...?
