Zenith Data Systems Final...

Was having a quick browse on eBay and came across a listing for a programme from the '92 ZDS Final (reserve £100 ).

The seller entered the following blurb....

THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE AN OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME PLAYED AT WEMBLEY STADIUM.

THIS WAS IN 1992 WHERE NOTTS FOREST PLAYED SOUTHAMPTON ON THE 29TH MARCH.

THIS MATCH WAS PLAYED ON BEHALF OF FOOTBALL AGAINST MS/ THE CHARITY IN AID OF ACTION AND RESEARCH FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROUIS.

CAPTAINING THE SOUTHAMPTON SIDE WAS BOBBY STOKES AND CAPTAINING FOR NOTTS FOREST WAS JOHN ROBERTSON

THIS PROGRAMME IS 42 PAGES IN TOTAL AND IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE BOOK FEATURES MANY OTHER STARS OLD AND NEW , INCLUDING AT THE TIME NOTTS FOREEST MANAGER BRIAN CLOUGH, PLAYERS INCLUDE STUART PEARCE , ROY KEANE , NIGEL CLOUGH, TEDDY SHERINGHAM.

SOUTHAMPTON MANAGER IAN BRANFOOT, PLAYERS INCLUDE TIM FLOWERS, MATTHEW LE TISSIER, ALAN SHEARER BUT TO NAME A FEW.

PROGRAMME SHOWS THE FOREST ROUTE TO WEMBLEY AND THE SAINTS WEMBLEY TRAIL.

I was only 12 at the time so don't have any major memories of the day, except throwing a strop because Psycho got knobbled and getting absolutely p*ss wet through. Did the charity match happen before the game, or is the seller on crack?

I was there. Andy Marriott played too I think.

Great days. If it was for charity it would have been called the MS Cup or something.

I rebought the programme off ebay a while back after giving all my programmes away to someone else years ago. Think it cost me about a tenner.

Didn't the programme look like the inside of a magical computer or something, I seem to recall.

I've got it at home somewhere.

For those looking a bit blank - The Zenith Data Systems Cup (or to give it it's proper unsponsored title, the Full Members Cup, also previously sponsored by Simod) was a cup competition created when English teams were banned from European competition after the Heysel disaster and was competed by English clubs from the top two divisions (Full members of the FA, hence it's name, teams from the bottom two divisions were only associate members and had their own cup competition, the Football league Trophy, still contensted today and sponsored by Johnsons Paint).

Zenith Data Systems were early pioneers in the home computer market and later, the first company to make laptop computers commerically available. Geeks like me will remember that the first lapt-tops were nicknamed 'lunchboxes' as they, well, looked like lunch-boxes...

Forest team that day was:-

1 GK Andrew Marriott
2 DF Gary Charles
3 DF Stuart Pearce
4 DF Des Walker
5 DF Darren Wassall
6 MF Roy Keane
7 MF Gary Crosby
8 MF Scot Gemmill
9 FW Nigel Clough
10 FW Teddy Sheringham
11 MF Kingsley Black
12 sub DF Steve Chettle
Manager Brian Clough

Hmm, however did we get by in the days of one substitute?

I'm sure you could have two substitutes in the league at that point!

Remember going to this game and my Mum telling me off for booing the Wembley band who were playing "When the Saints go Marching in" not realising it was Southampton's anthem so t'was good natured banter.

The players loved to play football and wanted to play every game possible and were not overpaid primadonna's unlike today they moan about the amount of games and have 4 weeks out injured with a broken toe nail.Years ago it was a working man game and were hard enough to get up and get on with it.

Miserable git, and proud.
The 1992 ZDS Cup Final and the 1989 Simod Cup Final programmes are 10 a penny, and I wouldn't advise anybody paying more than a fiver for either of these, same as the Littlewoods Cup Final programmes from 1989 and 1990. So yes, the seller is either stupid, or really trying to rip people off.

The 1991 FA Cup Final and 1992 Rumbelows Cup Final programmes on the other hand are worth money, and I would expect to pay £10 for each at the very least (the Spurs cup final, complete with poster should go for at least £20.00), and why are they worth more? Because Diana was at both finals!

I belong to nobody!!!
I think my dad still has his 1991 FA Cup final program with the poster in it. I also think he still has his ticket stub.

Is it worth more with a ticket stub?

My dad still has the programmes in good condition on the 1989 Hillsborough disaster as well as the replay at Old Trafford,I reckon they be worth a few bob.

From this...I deduce that Winnits is actually Megatron's dad. :bristolfan:

Hi All

Infrequent poster, frequent viewer!

If anyone is interested, I have a box full of probably 100 -200 programmes from the late 70 early 80 some signed by home and away players at the time.

I am desperately trying to clear some space at the moment and therefore if anyone would like to take them off my hands please get in touch (PM)

Thanks

Gary

The Hillsborough 89 and Hillsborough 88 programmes are not worth much at all, I'd say around £3, the 89 Old Trafford programme probably £4-£5.

The seller has clearly not done his research, there's another ZDS Final programme on e-Bay, for 99p!

Remember listenening to this game on the radio, it was a propper cup final not a charilty game. If I rememeber correctly Scott Gemmill scored twice in a 3-2 win.

As others have stated, a previous sponser of this short lived cup competition was Simod. I Went to the Simod cup final at Wembley in 89 i think i was, was a cracking match, can still picture Gary Parker running the whole length of the pith after playing a 1-2 with Des Walker on the edge of our area and going on to score ;D
