Shows how average our recruitment has been for a side that wants promotion that Yuri looks like he is inevitably going a free. If we had shit hot recruitment we’d be selling Yuri for 10 mill this summer instead of Worrall and go and get another left back for far less.

Aye. Yuri was often hailed as a shining example of how "awesome" our recruitment was. To me he embodies that averageness.

The trick is not to believe the hype that a lot of posters peddle dude. Yeah they'll shout you down over & over as they claim Modesto's amazing for signing an average LB and a Sow(gy) biscuit, but ultimately truth always shines through.

A good transfer policy would have seen a loan or short-term older pro come in to challenge Yuri in January 20 instead of Bong on long term contract.

Then an upgrade on Yuri last summer, with Yuri’s contract extended to be decent backup.

Not signing Bong and Blackett til 2022 and Ioannou til 2023, loaning Ioannou out straight away, losing Ribeiro for free and trying to find a buyer for an overpaid over the hill Bong.

Pretty sure most of us said that at the time too.....

Remember you saying so at the time, and also highlighting how crackers it was that we had Blackett on our radar for 18 month, and decided to sign Bong only a handful of months before Blackett was out of contract.

Crazy way to operate.

Sounds like the decision to leave is at least partially Yuri's himself.

He mentions Covid-its been bloody hard on colleagues of mine from Europe many of whom haven’t been able to visit home for over a year. I’m not surprised it’s influenced his decision-the portuguese are very family oriented and he’s probably come to conclusion tgat life’s too short....

There was rumours of Figueiredo being homesick a while back too, if I remember correctly. Working abroad away from your family can be difficult at the best of times, so with Covid19 restricting travel I can understand why he might feel that way and wouldn't be surprised if his next club was back in Portugal.

His words just confirm what his performances this season have suggested.
Our most technically competent left-back, but probably our least motivated. Move on, replace. Needs to be done.

Fair enough, although with him going, I hope we don't decide to double down on Bong or Iannou.
They can all go on that left side, get some proper quality at left back.

Bong, Ioannou and Blackett would be adequate but no more. Yuri would fit into that category given the baseline of his performances not the purple patch he had middle of last season.

I'm really not sure who we would get who is better though. Like anything I think our main market is up and coming players from L1 who we'll have to accept might not be 100% ready yet

Ioannou seems to be ones of those players who has got better and better in his absence.

Isn't he the guy who delivered nice crosses for two games, then settled into Forest-level performances before leaving us short at Luton and being identified as bomb squad material on the forum? He's reputation has made a comeback in recent months, seeing his name regularly now as one of the must-keeps.

I think a lot of it is similar to the same thing we've seen constantly with other players who are written off too soon.

He didn't look any worse than any of the LBs we have, is still relatively young, and was settling into a different country (though he was initially in Manchester but had come from abroad) and new team mates.

We've constantly had players who haven't really had a chance been written off quickly before later showing they are better than that. Bong is another good example of it, he had 60 mins or so against Charlton where we made a load of changes and the whole team was crap. So everyone thinks he's crap (when he hadn't played for a while before either) before later finding that actually he is adequate for what we need, just about. And not to mention the constant stream of players who we as fans write off after a few games and think they're crap to the extent they end up leaving and pulling up trees elsewhere.

I'm not sure that he has had enough of a chance to show whether he will be a good or bad move for us yet. You could read all sorts into what happened on loan but only the player and the clubs will really have an idea. As for that red card, well that was silly, and let's be fair it was a bit of a muppet moment from the ref to give it, we've had much sillier and avoidable reds and people haven't written the player off for them (Yates and Ribeiro for example), in most cases that challenge wouldn't have even been a yellow.

So how many people - after he returned from somewhat unstellar loans at Sheff Weds and Burnley, and not doing much here, would have wanted us to get rid of David Johnson in summer 2002?

Yuri says some nice things about the fans in that interview. Says we’re amongst the best in England because we took over 4k away on a Wednesday night. But also says we are demanding...

I’ll translate the whole interview later if anyone is interested.

Really? Where have you got this from? Last I looked he was dropped after a few early loan starts and a constant bench warmer since.

Francis can speak for himself,of course, but I understood him to mean it in the sense that “absence makes the heart grow fonder” rather than performances on the pitch.

Good luck chap.

I didn't rate him as much as a lot of others, for me he benefitted hugely from Cash & Lolley's storming partnership down the other flank, but he gave his best and seems a good bloke.

If rumours are to be believed, the club's treatment of him is nowt short of awful, so I hope wherever he goes next he doesn't get messed about as much.

Deserves credit for being one of the best divers at the club we've had in a while. Good at rolling around semi-convincingly after too.

For me he was a solid left back. I much prefer my fullbacks to be solid defensively and add the attacking flair as a secondary consideration-guess I'm old fashioned in that regard and obviously if they are good defenders and quick-silver attackers as well, then you have hit the jackpot, but that's rare and probably why top examples fetch so much money.

I don't think Yuri did much wrong during his time with us-I think he would have been good enough to have held his own in a promotion winning side but I don't think he'd fetch much money mainly because he was very solid, but not spectacular going forward, so him leaving on a free doesn't seem quite the disaster some are alleging on here, particularly as he's almost certainly going home where there isn't much money swilling around...

Agree that it's not a disaster if we replace him with someone who is at least defensively competent. My worry is that we will just settle for Blackett and Bong as our left back options though...

That's a fair summary, and mine would be similar

But plenty of posters who had a hard on for recruitment turned a solid LB into "an awesome top 6 signing". I think he balanced us nicely and, alongside Ameobi, really complimented Cash & Lolley down the other flank. But "top 6 LB and a gem find from an awesome recruitment team"? Nah. Solid, likeable signing who looked good in a well balanced Lamouchi team.

We've a history at this club in recent years for failing to recognize how much good managers with a good plan get from average players. Chambers, McGugan, Ameobi, Silva, Yuri.....all players with qualities which really help the team, but also players uitilized well by clever managers in a system which suits. Not top 6 gems we've unearthed which would walk into any top 6 side.

McGugan's one of my most favourite players in recent years, but he was nothing without a manager who knew how to get the best from him, and certainly not someone who would fit into any top 6 side. Yuri comes from a similar cast IMO. Will defo remember him fondly, but take away the players which complimented him and his actual standard shines through.

The one caveat to that is that he's still only 24, so over the next 2-3 years could still improve to be a genuine top 6 player. As always Forest's eye is on the short term of course. Better to pay out fortunes for a plethora of other average LB's, than give a single manager time to develop & system and player.

Obviously wants to get home and I don't blame him. Got plenty of time to grow to an attacking left back, tidy up his passing and he'll be a top championship level player, he isn't that far off
Has the potential for sure good luck to him

Yes, and whilst not wanting to
Drop the “C” bomb on this thread he’s exactly the same age as another of our portuguese lads who is continually talked cut slack because of his “potential”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Yuri turned into an excellent full
Back by 28, but I think it may be a few years before he’s on these shores again.

Reports over here that he is in talks with our main rival PAOK. According to the same reports he wanted to stay at Forest but Hughton decided not to offer him a new contract. If the numbers in these reports are accurate (he reportedly earned 300K euros per year), I'm not sure Hughton's decision was correct.
