Just wondering about promotion, relegation and that. When we went down to the 3rd Division, we mad Megson, who failed miserably to get us on the sort of run that'd of got us back up, and he got the hoof.

I'm wondering if we went up, and came back down, what are the chances that Billy, who's clearly a f***ing good manager, could turn us around, stop the rot, and get us on a run to go up again?

Have there been many managers that've done this sort of thing? I can't think of any off the top of me head who've brought their team straight back up, stopped the rot, brightened up the outlook, offloaded the dross, and rebuilt. It seems to me that this process is most often put into action by hoofing the manager. Which might well be where the problems start, because its a lottery whether there's anyone new about who's as good as the bloke you've just sacked.

To all those who hate thinking about the P word, let me dream, all right? ;D

I think the thing to do, if you think this is likely, is not to buy loads of expensive players that you then can't afford when you get relegated.

TBH I though that this was what BD was doing at Derby in buying players like Earnshaw and Miller, excellent quality at this level and maybe good enough for the prem but then if things go tits up they're the sort of players youy can hang onto and help get you up again.

Curbishley at Chrlton springs to mind as one who went up, down then up again.

Maybe Allardyce at Bolton as well?

A young Watford Manager, sorry forgotten his name, when Watford were promoted and really struggles was promised his job how ever the season panned out, but I think he went the following season as they failed to reproduce their spectacular efforts of the promotion season.

With a manager who has a wealth of experience under his belt, It would be for Forest, BD would be the ideal Manager to retain.

The problem for Derby was that they needed to replace their entire squad to have a chance of surviving in the Premiership, and they ended up with a squad of about 30 players and a second string of shit players they couldn't get rid of to balance it out. If you look at their squad from that season, you can't really pick out any players other than Earnie who have any real quality. You're always gonna struggle with a centre back pairing of Darren Moore and :leacock:

Right now we have a squad of 20 something mostly young, but all very talented players. As it is now, we'd have a better chance of staying up than Derby, and with a few quality additions, we'd have a great chance. Look at Birmingham, Hull, Burnley etc. They went up with decent, well drilled squads with a bit of flair and are giving it a good go.

I don't disagree. I don't think Miller was a bad player either.

If you were to go up and then come back down I personally think you should defiantly keep billy in charge. When a new manager comes in he can decide "oh i only like half of this squad" and massive upheaval can follow. The usual result if this isn't success, look at us under Paul Jewell (who does not get his fair share of the blame for the state were in. Everybody blames billy.) When Jewell finished the prem season he completely changed the squad for our first season back in the championship. Bringing in a ridiculous amount of player's, most of whom weren't that great and were on a bloody good wage. If we hadn't have hired Nigel I'm pretty sure we would have gone down last year. We were awful!!! Along with the new players came new staff, from first team coaches to academy staff and now alot of them have gone.
We went up to soon, and billy's addition's did'nt help but I dont think he'd make the same mistake's twice and your squad now is better than our's was under billy (and younger) so the rebuilding job wouldnt be as big.
What I'm trying to say is you have to give billy time, promotion this season would be a overachievement in a year when becoming a competitive team was probably your aim. So the best bet would be to lick your wound's, get rid of those few who aren't quite good enough, regroup and push again.

Agreed, managers are too quickly dispensed with these days. That said, Calderwood got a lot of time from our board numerous times - so I don't think any hasty dismissals would happen.

Who else do you think would be better placed to get us back up there in that situation?
