Xaver "No Middle Name" Schlager

Andy Cole, Greening, Lennon, GARY HOLT!, Michael Stewart, Boateng, Curtis, Arter, Lingard, Shelvey

That's some list of "well known experienced pros" who were absolute toss at Forest. Holt being the worst. God he was awful. Maybe you could add Prutton to that list too as he was plenty experienced when we re-signed him. There are others I've forgotten.

It's never really been our market

Though our loans started our current renaissance off, without the 6 successful loanees we would never have got promoted
Yes but I actually meant the players we loaned (or even signed) from the bigger clubs like Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, most of these didn't work out...

Always thought Gary Holt got too much stick. He was a horrible player to watch but did what he did relatively effectively.

Ah, I remember watching Andrew Cole (as he then was) "playing" for Nottingham Forest, which seemed to involve the team kicking-off, and then Cole shuffling round the centre circle - and nowhere else, pointedly - before being inevitably substituted.

Still, the "Lenton Rude Boy" got to play for his local club, I suppose.

That's the first time I've been able to watch Forest live this season. All I'll say is, I'll have to trust you guys that Schlager has played a lot better than that before today.

Thought he was lively in the first half, one run alone through the middle took out about 5 Cov players but nobody made anything of it. Faded Kun the second though

He's a player that will rat around and do the simple bits with minimal fuss. That's fine and all but he's replacing a world class midfielder so the drop off is enormous. Not his fault clearly but we're just not going to see him running games and providing much going forward.

Replacing Anderson with a decent but limited freebie was a massive gamble.

I think that's too simplistic.

We replaced Anderson with Diomande more than anything. McAtee and Schlager have come in to different roles.

And we weren't replacing a £116m sale anyway.

And the problem wasn't Schlager today either.

I thought he was one of our better players today to be fair to him. I know that's not saying much. He put in effort.

It's still the heartbeat of the team though and makes a massive difference when the level of player drops off in there. Games are often won and lost in midfield.

Schlager cost nothing and has had a reasonable career. So he is what he is, I wouldn't come on here giving him too much stick as he puts his lot in but seems to just lack that extra level. That's on the recruitment team and Glasner who thought it would be fine not to go out and spend real money on a top CM.

He needs to be one of a midfield three in my opinion as in a two there's too much emphasis on him to get forward.

I think he's been a very good signing. He's obviously not Elliot Anderson but I'd now struggle to order the quality of our CMs as they're all much of a muchness, which itself says a lot as two of the other ones cost £30m and Schlager was a freebie.

I think the club could consider whether there is a market for Sangare in January given he's currently third choice and probably still hasa decent resale value, and then use the proceeds to bring in a top quality CM.

I think you usually hit the nail on the head, Maxi, but Sangare is head and shoulders a better player than Schlager.
The only reason to sell Sangare in January would be that we will make a decent profit.

Opinions isn't it.

I think Sangare is probably slightly better but not head and shoulders, and it's irrelevant anyway if he's not going to get on the pitch much because the manager either rates him lower than we all do or he thinks he's not right for the system.

I don't think Sangare covers enough ground to be the long term partner to McAtee in a 2 man midfield, you either need to work around one or the other and it seems like Glasner is all in on McAtee

I think he had a good game. In fact individually the players performed reasonably well. It was the system that failed.

I think he's our best option in this system when away from home and performances/results back that up. Maybe at home against the best sides as well.

But at home against a team that allows us possession, we need a different option with more creativity and ability to up the pace and intensity. Maybe that's Sangare, but i definitely dont think Schlager is the answer in a game like yesterday.
