Xaver "No Middle Name" Schlager

He played 40 games for us.

We won 18, drew 13 & lost 9 - and when he didn't play we always went on massive losing streaks.

I guess it is a double edged sword, if he wasn't so aggressive he wouldn't have got injured so much but if he wasn't so aggressive he would be half the player.

But I can't recall a better tackler than he was, and I include our PL era in that, as I say I think he easily could have played at this level.
I love Samba Sow. What a shame his body wasn't quite up to it. If Schlager can be that kind of beast he'll be a fan favourite for years to come.

There’s a little bit of the Danilo about the way Schlager cruises around the pitch. Schlager is a far more disciplined (and withdrawn) player than Danilo but they both are constantly moving, waiting, anticipating, shark like, searching out moments to cut out or intercept, and break forward. Love these types of players.

Genuinely isnt sarcasm, obviously all the reactions to my post mean I am missing something. Must be just me, sometimes you just cant see what a player brings and this is one of them for me.
Fair play for having an opinion reasonably held.

Whilst Schlager is clearly very decent, collectively, folks can go in mob handed when someone has a minority opinion.

Don’t forget Michael Stewart once turned us down :(
He could have turned us up but he was still shite

Typical overrated Man U fringe player who never really did anything anywhere else. I remember someone like John Curtis was highly rated at that stage and ended up doing very little, in the end he ended up playing for us in League 1 and wasn't exactly amazing there.

A lot of these loans never seem to work for us - or even buys. Most of what we've had from Man U or Arsenal has been either utter dross or they've played silly when we've tried to buy (Hendo and Garner).

Danny Sonner, Brynjar Gunnarson and Michael Stewart. It wouldn't have been so bad but it was all in the same f***ing squad.
I thought Gunnarson was ok (relatively) I remember (memory may be clouded) Sonner missing a nailed on free header for the winner against Derby, that was it for me

I remember we had Gunnarsson on trial after he left Stoke and he played in a friendly v Ajax, looked good (and of course it was Ajax) and everyone on the official forum seemed to want him signed up... He got injured in the first match and then didn't do much after but then we had that downward spiral towards the end of Hart's time anyway

Danny Sonner came on a free and hadn't done a lot before that and I don't think a lot was expected of him which was probably about right as he wasn't very good

That was a bleak old time wasn't it!
It absolutely f***ing was.

I used to read Cormac McCarthy's The Road to cheer myself up.

The time in the 2013/14 season when Jonathan Greening stood still in the centre circle for an entire game with his mouth open, before eventually being substituted.

This was the season I was unrealistically excited by the signing of Djamel Abdoun. What a life eh?

I was excited when we signed The Terrorist upfront. That excitement quickly faded as he looked about as good as George Wear's fake brother when he got a game for Southampton.

Forgot all about Jonathan Greening. Expected him to be good. Wasn't

Because he was old by the time we got him, another McClaren genius move.

Thing is Greening was actually a decent player for WBA and Fulham but he was past his peak when we got him and knowing that time I bet he was some way down the list of targets because the club wouldn't pay for the players McClaren actually wanted so probably he went for someone because he knew him from Man U same as Boateng who he managed at Boro as well as Miller, Derbyshire, Reidy (who was also on a free and had played for us before)...

The Greening of a few years before would have adequately replaced Paul McKenna (who had left the club when his contract expired and also when Davies was sacked) as the experienced engine room midfielder (similar role which I think Schlager is doing now, to keep this more on topic, even though he's perhaps more of an Anderson replacement too with his work rate) but wasn't up to it any more even when he had just signed. When we got round to the famous meme time from Billy, it was a couple of years later, and Greening hadn't been anywhere near a first team player until we had a lot of injuries (we'd had the McClaren/Cotterill season, when Doughty passed away, then the sale to al-Hasawi, the season with O'Driscoll, McLeish and then Davies, and then into the second season of Davies' second spell) and he was even more off the pace. And that season we tanked a promotion challenge into midtable of course under Gary Brazil.

Gunnarson was a decent player but needed the right mixture of players around him to negate the extreme lack of pace. Got promoted to the Premier League with Reading and stayed of gir a couple of years I think.

Though our loans started our current renaissance off, without the 6 successful loanees we would never have got promoted
