World Cup Consideration begins

lets see how it goes

It would be amazing IF we could just upgrade the City Ground !

REPRESENTATIVES from Nottingham are to take part in the launch of England's bid to host the football World Cup.
The Football Association is campaigning to host either the 2018 or 2022 tournament.
The bid is being launched at Wembley Stadium tomorrow.
Nottingham is one of 15 cities being considered as a potential venue.
A technical paper to be submitted to the football's world governing body Fifa by May 2010 must include 12 stadiums with minimum capacities of 40,000.
The City Ground in its current state is unlikely to be considered fit but the club is hoping to build a new stadium, with a site at Holme Pierrepont a possibility

I agree. A new stadium would probably plunge us into deeper debt and make us even more reliant on Sugar Daddy Doughty.

I love the city ground too but what is this supposed loss of atmopshere you speak of? Most of the time is there is no atmosphere to lose.

to be fair. Nige has talked about upgrading the stadium in interviews and I think the general consensus from fans is that they don't want to move ! Hopefully this has filtered up !

As much as we would like to upgrade the facilities at the CG theer comes a time when it would be finanical beneficial for the club to build a new stadium.

For all the reasons previously mentioned: Not being freehold of the land, Police not allowing extra capacity in main stand with single exit, local West Bridgford residents moaning about matchday parking/traffic.

If it happens we should focus in ensuring it doesn't turn in a no atmosphere environment but lets face it the CG is a shadow of atmosphere of previous years. Maybe a rejig, having a proper Kop end behind the goals (home both ends) might actually create a better atmosphere. hell there may even be a working tannoy system!

The ground could be upgraded to 40,000 and then it could still be used as a World Cup venue surely?

It's not just the number of seats that's the issue, it's the facilities and accessibility too.

I can see why logistically a new ground is seen as the preferable option, but obviously emotionally it would suck arse.

No both Council and Police have said the Main Stand if rebuilt can not hold greater capacity due to restrictions of the single gate exit/emergency access etc.. the only way would be to bulldoze some of the surrounding house etc..

Imagine just double the current main stand people leaving via the gate near the club shop, to get an extra 10,000 would have be nearly 3 times the current capacity!

What about that land from the back of the trent to the other bridge ? It's just wasteland ! ideal for a main exit !

You mean the land behind the Brian Clough stand? That's not much help to a Main Stand rebuild!

Aye, but the land between the carpark and main stand, surely it's just warehouses isn't it ? I seem to remember a lot of floating poop by the river and graffiti ! Unless we're building a pride park replica !

There's the small matter of the pitch being in between it and the main stand, though lol

I don't think there's nearly enough parking space for the current site to be considered for the World Cup.

Saying that, I love the City Ground and genuinley don't care if it doesn't host Senegal vs. Slovakia in Group F.

We simply cannot allow this!

If the CG could be improved to host the world cup then this would be fantastic news.

If not then bugger it, let some other place have it. No tournament is worth sacrificing our entire future for.

Holme Pierpont my arse!

Why are people saying theirs only 1 exit from main stand?
Surely people can remember the alley to the trent.......

Holme Pierpont is closer to Sedgebrook, after that I cannot think of any other reason not to agree ;D

Like with most of these sorts of announcements, I simply don't believe them. For starters they could open up a thoroughfare between the river and the Main Stand, which is basically just a players car park at the moment, around the Robin Hood suite. This would let the additional 10,000 fans disperse evenly between the Bridgeford enterance and this side.

You could knock down the club shop and study support centre if you liked making much more room coming out of the ground, and helping reduce the bottle neck as fans go up the street. In the grand scheme of things compared with building a new stadium this wouldn't be hugely costly.

While I'm at it, how about an improved, or new, Lady Bay Bridge which was far wider for pedestrians to walk on, and again eased the pressure on numbers of fans heading for Trent Bridge. A nice new bridge could be part of any scheme which looked to develop on brownfield land around the area.
