I hope the opening ceremony features Diana Ross actually scoring her penalty this time, before performing a Psycho style celebration.

I am quite looking forward to it! Hopefully flying out from NC I can make a few of the games. US tickets will be quite hard to get but worst case I can get some for some other games. 4 years to save up money lol.

i’m confused on some of these places, i’m pretty sure you can’t play in the summer in Kansas OR HOUSTON? Are we expecting another winter world cup?
That or a shit ton of cool down breaks.

Houston, Dallas and Atlanta all have retractable roofs. Kansas City was the only that surprised me. It's the oldest stadium in the bid by a lot. There is nothing covering any of the stands and it can be scorching in the summer. Mid-to-high 30s all week at the moment in KC with humidity. It's been speculated that Las Vegas and Phoenix (both very nice stadiums IMO) were ruled out because it's just too hot for spectators in the summer, even if the indoor stadiums would have been fine.

It is amazing to me that some of these new American stadiums are built for billions of dollars but seem to have fatal flaws. There was concerns that SoFi in LA was too narrow. The near-side corner flags/corners aren't visible on TV in Atlanta because of the angle of the stands. Surely that has to be fixed. There's huge glass windows in Dallas that cause blinding glare during certain times of the day. I think scheduling can fix that because I don't know how else they could resolve that one.

It's going to be interesting. Huge geographic spread, absurd tournament format, could have extreme heat and possibly air quality could be an issue.

Roy Keane once said he lost nearly ten pounds in weight during the Ireland match in Miami, even though the team were hydrating themselves.

The heat and time zones will be a problem as it was in 1994.

A shame Jackie Charlton and John Aldridge aren't around for Ireland these days.

I always think that the guys at FIFA and UEFA are like the middle managers at BOAC/BA when I worked there. They would network like mad, move from job to job and at every stop along the way would change things to show how busy they are and it's something to put on their CV.

All the changes were unnecessary and usually annoyed the workers, but were a rite of passage for those guys.

All these international tournaments are exactly the same. Every time we have a tournament, there are bewildering changes which don't actually add anything to the tournament as a football spectacle.

don’t get me f***ing started on Levi’s stadium in it south bay area for the 49ers. stadium is practically unreachable, parking is horrifically expensive and dumb, half the stadium bakes under the sun since there’s no roof and IT IS NOT IN SAN FRANCISCO.

that lost point isn’t that important, but it still pisses me off.

Agreed.

They should have used Ford Field in Motown; centrally located, plenty of reasonable parking and loads to do nearby.

Only downside is it’s in Detroit. Can’t have shit in Detroit.

We used to stay in Ann Arbor when flying to Detroit. Used to stay in town, but they had a riot in 1967 and we moved hotels to steer clear of trouble. Arrived at the new hotel same time as the Pistons team. Golly, they were tall, but really nice guys. It's hell when you're talking to a group of guys and craning your neck to do it.

Remember having an interesting discussion, after a few beers it must be admitted, with an American chap in Lefty O'Doul's on Union Square (I think, our hotel was on the other corner, if I remember) in San Francisco about cricket and baseball. I remember mentioning rounders and not being allowed to hit the batter, which resulted in a lively evening.

Just noticed this thread. VERY disappointed my city (Edmonton) didn't get any games. But our dimwit Premier (apparently) made multiple demands of the CSA/FIFA, and we have turf rather than grass on our 56K stadium, so it was a no go. Toronto's stadium seats about 30K but is being upgraded to just under 46K. BC Place seats 55K. Sis lives in Vancouver so I might be able to fanangle something, but highly doubtful.
