Why did Clough sell Teddy?

I was too young at the time Sheringham left us and Im wondering why we sold the league's top scorer that year?

Yeah, whilst in an ideal world we'd have kept him, I don't think we could've done as his heart wasn't in it here - more's the pity.

The mistake was not replacing him adequately.

I do tend to forget he played for us actually.

Shame really because I always liked him, even when he was at Manure and Spuds.

We never saw his very best, but he was bloody good nonetheless.

Oddly he and Pearce had the same haircut at the time lol

haha yes they did, that was quite odd... tis ture we didnt see the best of him but what we did see was outstanding!

you cant EVER lose respect for Clough he was drinking heavily and he admitted he should have gone earlier but you can NEVER ever lose respect for the man, especially in respect of teh teddy affair as its wasnt down to him teddy came out saying he wanted to move away back to london , when someone says that you cant keep him against his will

Clough sold Teddy and Keane who both went on to win everything there is.

How stupid was he.

With his goals that year surely we would of avoided relegation?

Not just his goals , Teddy had just as many assists. He's the only forest player that seemed to have a radar sense of where everyone seemed to be , even better than nigel imo , a real intelligent player and why united bought him for.

Judgement clouded by time?

Although Sherringham scored 20 goals that season, his general play wasn't particularly good, and his involvement in matches was limited, and I think Cloughie dropped him for a couple of away games towards the end of the season. I remember him scoring a hat trick in a league cup game (against Palace I think), and thinking that he'd finally learnt how to be part of a team. His last game for us, when he scored against the scousers, summed him up, as it was the only thing he did all game. There is no doubt though, that he was a better player when he left us, and we would have definately stayed up, if he hadn't left.

Wasn't it because he had a son with some model type that he wanted to be near?

Just looking back at what could of been.

Be glad for what we have had.

Without Clough, we'd have been a medium sized average club like Burnley, Preston, Derby, Leicester etc.

and if im not mistaken it wasnt Sir Brian that sold Keano, it was Frank Clarke!

Indeed, we had the inevitable exodus once we were relegated. However we came back a better side.

It was only alleged in a courtroom where the person making the allegation couldn't be taken to court for slander. The person making the allegation never repeated it outside of court.

I've always seen things from a different perspective. Rather than seeing the sale of Sheringham (and the failure to adequately replace him) as the turning point for us, I've always believed that the FA Cup final of 1991 was the most important match of the last two decades. If Cloughie had won this match I continue to believe he would have retired gracefully, having won everything at the club he possibly could. I still think that, had he asked Taylor to accompany him down the tunnel on that day, we'd have won the only cup that eluded him. We would then have been in a strong position going into the following season as reigning FA Cup champions and moving into a bright new era post-Clough before alcohol totally clouded his judgement. With the Sheringham deal presumably already in the pipeline, added to a team including Roy Keane, Psycho and Nigel Clough, we can all dream about what could have been.
