Who's playing it right?

We won't know until next season, but we can all waffle about it like we know to pass the time until kick off. Who's playing the pre season the right way so far? Us, or Derby?

Derby have signed yet another bloke I've never heard of, for not very much really ...

"Derby County are closing in on the capture of Exeter City midfielder Dean Moxey after agreeing a fee for his services. "

Meanwhile, there's talk of BD spending quite a bit more. Do you think we're doing the right thing? Could we spend ourselves into trouble? Will Clough's frugal signings pay off or our cash splashing?

Managers typically sign players they know best. This is why when a Premiership club appoints a Spanish manager, they end up with a load of Spanish players, or players who've played in Spain.

Derby have appointed a non-league manager and are therefore signing a bunch of non-league players, or players who have recently been in non-league. Whether they work out or not depends on how good an eye young Nige has for a player...

Personally I think we are, and that's trying not to be biased.

Nigel is building an untested team, who may well rise to the challenge.

Davies is signing people most have heard of, who have track records in this league.

I suppose the more pressing question is, would Derby still be signing players from Exeter if they could afford players from teams above themselves?

I'm not saying they're broke, but it does raise an interesting question. Are they signing them because Nigel knows them, or because they have no resources.

We've had little to no resources over the past few years, and had to sign players from teams one would deem 'below' us. Tyson, Cohen, McCleary, Agogo all techincally came from teams below us, but when they were put together, they got us promoted.

That's not to mention the players we brought through like McGugan and Perch, who are stilla rguably playing below their level in our first team.

It's tricky question, and one that I don't really think any of us can anwer at this point in time.

I think it has more to do with resources. Derby cannot afford to go out on a limb with such an inexperienced manager (at this level anyway). They will be happy to see what bargains he can pick up from the lower leagues and take it from there.

Tell you what, its going to make our first game against them even more interesting, because it'll be a true test of who is playing it right.

To an extent, the true test will be the final league positions next year.

Seen him play for Exeter several times this season, he's a cracking prospect. i'd have liked Forest to take a chance on him.

most if not all of the non and lower league signings are going into a development side, a mates mate is now something (maybe physio/fitness instructer) in this development squad

development side = reserves

so the derby side that just about finished in 18th place last season is not being bolstered by first team players but a bunch of reserves and (maybe) first team players of the future? could be a tough season for them next year!

i think the idea is to expose them to there senior squad and see if they pick anything up, show a bit more class.
the law of averages says they will found one if they buy enough and at them prices they can get plenty word is no high profile signings if they can avoid them. i think they'll struggle next year

They have made signings but most of them are conference players not what you want to be looking for. We supposedly have signed Adebola already and the quality of player being looked it is very impressive and something I look foward to seeing come to fruition.

I just wish that the Reds had kept the potential signings secret UNTIL we signed them. Yes, I know some of the papers blabbed but we could have denied everything until we had the players in the bag. We could be left with egg on our face.

You mean like last season? Earnshaw, Garner, Moussi and Anderson?

It could have been better maybe, but it was certainly 'good'

I'm hoping it's us and nigel hasn't got the same knack of spotting players like his old man. I'd doubt most of the players he has signed are for the first team but if they are given time to bed in and come good for him then he'll be lauded for it. I don't think Derby will struggle as some people are suggesting, don't get me wrong I don't think they'll be storming the league but they still have a some good players. As much as I'd love to see it I can't see them struggling as they have this year.

As for us I think Billy knows what he's doing and all the right noises are coming fromaround the club despite us not announcing anything yet. IF we get the likes of Mills, Mckenna, Blackstock and Gunter alongside a few surprise signings we don't know about then it could be the best season we've seen for years.

people often say that the youth of today have no grasp of language but as this shows they have evolved there own language, and this language has been dubbed "niggerish"

I would be concerned as a Derby fan. A bunch of conference players untried and untested I personally don't understand why? They have to get used to the pace of the league the crowds and the quality sticking a bunch of them in the squad isn't going to make that easy.

I read today also that Claude Davis or someone is available on a free transfer after he was purchased for 3mil I personally don't see alot of success at Pride Park.

And which manager spent ÂŁ3m on Claude Davis? Yes, you're right...

IMO, I think Derby are taking a similar gamble to Wolves a couple of seasons ago. Wolves weren't spectacular the first season, but once all their players had found their feet so to speak, they were comfortably promoted. Derby also have a huge squad as a legacy of the Davies and Jewell periods, so the conference players aren't necessarilyreplacing anybody.

We're taking a more tried and tested route, which will probably see us finish above them next year. After that, who knows?

I'd suggest that our 'blueprint' is similar to that of Wolves.

Generally buying younger players from smaller clubs in the hope that they'll progress with the rest of the young 'group' at Forest. Then occasionally splashing out big when a more 'proven' player becomes available; Earnshaw, Ebanks-Blake, Berra, Mills (?), etc.

Obviously Wolves had a more experienced base to build this young squad on, something which Billy seems to be adding as well, with the bids for McKenna and Adebola.
