Where do you all come from?

Having spent a short while on this forum, I gather that there are a significant number of Forest fans who don't live in the Nottingham area. So far, I've seen posters on this site who come from Dover, Reading, London and somewhere else which is 120 miles away (they didn't say where they were from).

Out of curiosity - for those who don't live in Nottingham:

1. How far do you travel to home matches?
2. How often do you travel to a home match?
3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there?
4. If you don't have connections with Nottingham, what makes you follow the team?
5. Do you follow your local team as well?

I find the subject of football fan support quite fascinating. Down here in the south, the teams local to me are Luton, Watford and MK Dons. The fans who follow these teams tend to live in the area(s) or have some kind of personal connection with the team and/or the area.

In addition, I used to work with a Leeds supporter who had no personal connection with the city of Leeds - he didn't know specifically what made him follow Leeds, he merely liked the team itself. I also know a West Ham supporter who has no personal connections with that area of London - he also says he just "likes the team"

I was born in Nottingham and currently live near Newark, having spent most of my life living near the city where my family still live in and around.

I try and make most weekend home matches and have been doing so since my first game against Wigan in 2004 when I took my seven year old son to his first game. 29,000 fans packed the stadium, we were up in the Gods in the Brian Clough stand and we watched David Johnson score the second half winner.

My sister was a huge Forest fan during the 70's / 80's and I really owe my introduction to the REDS to her. I remember watching her leave the house with hats and flags and horns and wishing I could go too. TV Forest highlights were the closest I got at that time.

1. How far do you travel to home matches?Depends upon the method of transport, in a car it takes about 40 minutes on matchdays but abother 25 minutes to park somehwere in the middle of westbridgeford. On the bus it takes about the same amount of time but we dont have to park that.
2. How often do you travel to a home match? I had a season ticket for a few years on the bounce when we were in the championship and then in league 1 but dont have one now. I try and get to about 10 home games a season.
3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there? My Mum is from Dublin but moved to Nottingham when she was 5, my dad and all his family are Netherfield people and my 2 brothers were born in Mapperly but I was born in Gunthorpe out in the sticks.
4. If you don't have connections with Nottingham, what makes you follow the team?
5. Do you follow your local team as well? We have a local sunday morning team but im usually in bed on a sunday morning

what kind of psychopath 'just likes the leeds team'?

He never explained but I guess he may like some of the players or may have followed the team since the days they were at the top - initially glory hunting and then adopting the approach of sticking with one team through thick and thin. It could be something from childhood e.g. it started as the result of being the first team he ever watched on live TV, and felt some kind of personal connection with.

There are many different types of football fan, ranging from the hardcore fanatics who comply with the romanticised image of (football team support = monogamous lifelong marriage), to glory hunters and casual fans. There's no right or wrong approach since everyone is different, and what may suit one person may not suit another. Some people support one team and some people support more than one team.

In any case, I respect his following of Leeds United in the same way as I respect any football fan - they're entitled to support who they want.

1. How far do you travel to home matches? I don't.
2. How often do you travel to a home match? ^
3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there? Lived in Hucknall all my life but moved to Sydney in February, hence why I cant watch Forest anymore.
4. If you don't have connections with Nottingham, what makes you follow the team?
5. Do you follow your local team as well? Well we've actually got a Sydney FC season ticket this year but not been yet, and it will be nothing like watching the trickys.

No wonder my post count..
Fine, I shall complete this again:

1. How far do you travel to home matches? Just shy of 100 miles. (Homing in from Bolton)
2. How often do you travel to a home match? Last season I went to 2 home matches. I plan to visit at least 5 or 6 this season.
3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there? Nope. I have a friend who goes to uni there, that's about it.
4. If you don't have connections with Nottingham, what makes you follow the team? Just chose them when I were younger and have followed them sinces.
5. Do you follow your local team as well? I check in from time to time to see how Bolton are f**king things up with the ginger genius. I was also following Bury last season when they were nearly promoted.

1. How far do you travel to home matches? Never known or cared how far it is in terms of miles, takes around two hours to drive down from West Yorkshire though.
2. How often do you travel to a home match? Ever since getting a season ticket last year I've managed to make all the home League games, hopefully that trend will continue.
3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there? Dad's side of the family is from Nottingham plus a long since passed family member used to play for them way back in ye olden times. My uncle still carries around a medal he won.
4. If you don't have connections with Nottingham, what makes you follow the team? Tossing all my connections aside, I'm an idiot.
5. Do you follow your local team as well? I keep meaning to pop down to watch my village team but when it comes to the crunch I have an apathy attack.

1. How far do you travel to home matches? Depends where I am. If I'm here in Oxford it takes a good 2 hours, and at the parents maybe 30 minutes

2. How often do you travel to a home match? Used to be a season ticket holder but my wierd shift tends to stop me attending more than a couple a season

3. Do you have any personal (non-team) connections with Nottingham? for example, were you born there? family come from there? used to live there? Born in Mansfield but Moved to Nuthall very young. Parents and missus are still there

5. Do you follow your local team as well? No. The general attitude of the Oxford fans keeps me well away. I have been to see Swindon. I used to Follow Forres Mechanics and Elgin when I lived on the north coast of Scotland but it's a bit far now ;D
