When are our players actually told that they are in the team?

I was just thinking about the Preston Game and Billy maybe resting some key players; and I stated wondering when the players actually get to know who is in and who is rested or dropped?

Say for example Billy wants to give Earnie a rest and also include a young player who has never ran out for the 1st Team before, does he call them in advance? Does every single player have to be at the ground at a certain time before they are told?
Also a degree of tactical confidentiality is needed so can the young player tell him Mum he is getting his first big chance and she must come and watch?

How does it work these days?

Slightly off topic, but I thought it was interesting that Ince was refusing to reveal his team until the last minute. Apparently he always does it and likes to play his cards close to his chest. Not known that happen before. Seems sensible though, keep the opposition guessing.

Might as well go fully off topic now and do the job properly ...

I'd imagine if they're not in the Squad, they're told the day before.

I expect Doughty then picks the team about 2.15pm on a Saturday, informs Sportschippers, who then tweets the players.

For what its worth (close to topic) - I've heard that harry rednap doesn't tell his players who's playing until the last minute. I think keeping the formation quiet as long as possible is more important than the personnel.

I am pleased that BD seems to still be in control of the players rather than the other way around.

Harry just wanders in, reels off 11 players, then goes all Mike Reid and tells the to 'Runarrrrounnndd!'

Who is Harry Rednap?

Anyways, I'm from the other school of thought, I think the players should be told, at the very latest, by the last scheduled training session before the game, so that they have at least one session to focus on the final points of their role within the tactical and strategic set-up for the match in question.

So what do you reckon?....does he tell +25 players to be at the Club at a certain time and only then say who is in the team and the rest go off to sit in the stands or not get on the bus?

I think I could do that, I'll rewrite my CV to bring that out more. I've never been any good at speaking in a cockney accent though, praps that doesn't matter.

I agree with congo regarding giving the players some notice, especially if you want a square peg to play like a round peg.

Does this have any connection with the £200 rollover on the starting 11 competition at all??

In yesterday's post, Mcgoldrick was saying that he knew he was playing the day before the Ipswich game, but it sounded like this isn't the norm.

I've got it on good authority that Nigel Clough sometimes tell his players as early as half time that they are in the team, and recently he has left it as late as the final 20 minutes.

Deforest, is that Humphrey Bogart or Mick Jones of the Clash in your picture? Mick had a penchant for American hats, but I can't imagine him in a bow tie...

Humphrey Deforest Bogart, of course - best actor in the whole wide world. Is that you under the hat in your pic or clint eastwood ?

I enjoyed the clash back in the day, saw them in Derby in 1977 (I think it was 1977), gig turned into a mass brawl, I got in for free because I didnt have any money (they were the days eh?)

Wish i could of seen the clash, but alas i was born too late. I too have been wondering if it might be Jonsey. Glad we cleared that up.

Did meet Mick once at a studio in Tiger Bay, he was with an unknown oik at the time.

Said oik turned out to be Pete Doherty.

I think I've read before that Billy selects the team the day before based on how they trained abs how he wants them to play.

This gives the squad some prep time I suppose.

Incidentally I never got to see The Clash (sadly) but did catch Big Audio Dynamite (who also feature Mick Jones) who were great.

In the Premiership, due to the squad limits, I believe the whole squad turn up in the morning when playing at home (or playing away travel to the hotel etc) then it's announced 2 or 3 hours before kick off. Youth team players who have performed well during that weeks training are told a few days before to come along and join the matchday squad.

As for non-premiership clubs, I guess it's down to the individual management style. But for Forest, I have never heard a starting 11 announced anymore than 2 hours before kick off, which leads me to think it's the morning to early afternoon of the game with a similar way of the squad turning up as a whole.

I can't speak on behalf of Billy but I know there was a bit a trouble in the Megson days when team sheets were leaked out prior to match day.

As a result thereafter, players were not informed of starting or team selections until an hour or so before kick off. There were instances when the players were advised on the match bound coach.

We all remember how desperate times were back then and the dressing room unrest and lack of trust in the club made progression very difficult.

For what it's worth, I happen to think Billy manages things very differently.

That makes sense - cheers mate

Would you believe it if I said it was Paul Simonon?

I think Silenzi got told he was in the side for Saturday matches about quarter to five and midweek matches about half nine.
