What's in a Name: Nottingham Forest

Why was the Forest rec socalled?

Because it was in Forest Fields? Or was Forest Fields named because of the Forest rec?

Is the fact that Sherwood Rise starts at the corner of the rec area give us some clues?

I think that however it occured, the Forest in Nottingham Forest is somehow related to the Sherwood Myths

I want circumstantial evidence if you disagree.

The club were initially known as "The Lings" when it was formed in 1865 by a group of young shinney hockey players, although reports conflict about how this hockey type game was originally adapted.

In the formative years there was a keen rivalry with their neighbours Notts County, which represented the first foray into competitive football at what was their original home, the forest recreation ground - hence the name Nottingham forest

thanks Ken Smales :)

I imagine Forest Fields and the Forest Rec probably took their name indirectly from Sherwood Forest anyway so indirectly we did too :)

I don't mind the whole Sherwood thing though, that was an incredible place for thousands of years and is now all but gone. To have the tree on the logo and people relate the two, and the legend of Robin Hood is fine - why should the local consecutive champions of Europe not stand alongside the great old woodland and the folk hero?

I think the true origins of the name matter more to fans than laymen.
