Kilburn Red
First Team Squad
Boxing Day 2008 - Doncaster humiliate Forest at the City Ground and Calderwood is finally heading for the exit.
Those long dark seasons in the third flight are now a distant memory.
But, is it simple luck, twinned with some wise investment or are there darker forces at work?
Does anybody else find it too much of a coincidence, that after 3/4/5 years of minimal investment our Chairman splash's the cash just as the World Cup bid arrives on the horizon?
Forget the politics for one minute though. Beating dire derby town and Leicester to the glory with a stadium that doesn’t exist is simply the icing on the cake.
Nottingham, with its heritage, infrastructure and superior character was always the only realistic option to stage the biggest sporting event in the world. With dodgy FIFA officials involved though, there was always the possibility of a shock announcement. Great to see the plastic bids of our small rival conurbations dismissed though and another chapter in our history is now there to be written.
Part of the master plan?
Although very sad to potentially say goodbye to our church, the City Ground, it is perhaps inevitable in the world of modern football.
Can’t remember the exact quote, but didn’t Darwin say something along the lines of “It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, but the species that is able to adapt”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking to turn this into another anti Doughty rant. Far from it. I like the new Chairman and his appetite for investment. And if its part of a larger well timed plan, then so what, let’s just enjoy the ride.
If Doughty is getting various grants etc making our potential new home possible then good luck to him. That’s his job, he wins, and perhaps we all win?
How times have changed since Calderwood’s last act of fruitless flawed football.
Billy is our King – Long live the King.
Relegation avoided in a canter (Although it
didn’t seem like it at the time). A Summer of 6 million investment. Unbeaten away. Derby destroyed and the Brian Clough Trophy comes home. Doncaster put firmly in their place. Newcastle taught a footballing lesson. Leicester humiliated. And it goes on and on.
And it not just the results, it’s the style of football achieving these results. Long Ball Billy! Comical. This is the best brand of football witnessed for decades. Shorey on loan and other players in the pipe line in January?
A football fans life turns in never ending circles. Some circles are bigger than others.
We Forest fans are still unique though in the world of football. European Champions to Third flight and all that. Those days are long gone though and we must embrace the future. I’m as guilty as any for perhaps using past glories as a big stick to bash Forest every time things didn’t go our way. It took time, but the future makes sense now. There is a bigger picture out there.
Thought I would get this festive feel good fumble out the way before the ghost of Christmas past visits my door tonight.
I think the penny dropped for me last week against Preston. It was half time, the football was good, the lovely folk who sit in front of me in A block served up some wonderful mulled wine from a thermos flask and it started to snow. That was pretty close to heaven. It simply doesn’t get much better.
A very Merry Christmas to all LTLF’ers & here’s to a prosperous 2010!
