McGoldrick has just cost us £1m+ from Southampton via NOTTS B****Y COUNTY. Is this madnes or what! What are our scouts doing, and why haven't we got a closer relationship with those across the river to work closely at developing talent?

The above is just a `rhetorical` rant!

With this in mind, what other BIG PLAYERS have we lost along the years? I remember a story that we lost McCallister when Cloughie said he was a poof and laughed at his cowboy boots at the Novatel on the A52! And, apparantly we also lost out to Beardsly, Bobby Moore and Trevor Brooking???

Are these stories true and does anybody have any other gems?

Notts County had a better youth set up for a number of years during mcgoldricks time as a youngster.
infact they always had the better youth system untill they went t*ts up a few years ago.

This thread is gash. Every team on planet earth will have overlooked players, released players or not signed players who've gone on to improve.

Chelsea shipped Glen Johnson out, only to be in for him again barely 2 years later. It happens.

I'd assume that if a player had to decide between us and Notts, we'd be first choice the majority of the time. Just the same as a youth player opting for Derby over Chesterfield.

The story goes that John Sheridan was about to put pen to paper after being lined up by Ronnie Fenton, when Cloughie wanders in knowing almost nothing of the deal after being at the bottom of a bottle for a while and asks Sheridan if he's "some kind of poof" on account of his earring. Sheridan storms out and drives up to the M1 to join Sheff Wednesday.

Mind you its always the same every club has those that got away... Wright-Phillips being the most recent one..

As for County the two players we should have tried to get from them that I always recall were Carig Short and Tommy Johnson.

Is it really neccessary to have people keeping an eye out for "talent" at Notts County? The gems they used to produce really don't exist anymore.
