We did not want Nige, but well done Nigel.

As much as the name Clough carries so much weight it would only have ended in tears.

Nigel Clough was a fantastic player for the reds, top scoring for many seasons before his move to Liverpool.

I personally feel like Forest have reached a crossroads and for once, we have chosen the right direction.

As romantic as young Nigel would have been in the hotseat, it simple did not stack up. Take his surname out the equation and his CV would not have made it past the Main Stand reception shredding pile.

On Boxing day evening I caught the Calderwood exit news late night via Ce-fax (Remember that?) As I lay in bed debating the potential candidates one name came back again and again. Who was the only, out of work, Manager with Championship credentials. A passionate manager with a fire in his belly to succeed?

There was only one man for the task Forest require........

Billy Davies.

These message boards have been full of utter tosh over the last few days - debating untruths and myth.

Nottingham Forest have just appointed the best manager available for the difficult task of securing Championship football.

I take my hat off to Nigel Doughty in securing a quality manager who will give the club the best chance of maintaining our Championship status.

Well done Nigel :bigboss:

It is encouraging to have a man who is naturally sceptical and not afraid to criticise the club backing the new manager.

Perhaps a few people can abandon this anti-Davies nonsense.

I agree on the Clough thing, no chance he would have even been mentioned but for the surname. And it would be a terrible burden on a nice young bloke to have him try and follow in his father's footsteps so publicly and with no chance of success.

Hear, hear there's no guarantees but if I was the chairman without letting sentiment getting in the way Curbishley and Davies would have been the first two men I would have approached for the job.A sensible appoint under the circustances and it's good to see you appeased Kilburn :-*

My thoughts exactly. Selecting a manager should not be about who the fans want or who will bring the most publicity. It should be about who will take this club toward in this league and in Davies I think we've got the right man. Hopefully he will have everyones support and the Clough lovers will accept his appointment is a step in the right direction.

Kilburn,

I concur.

I contemplated forsaking this forum altogether, as I posted a few days ago, and this post amply justifies my decision to stay as it offers well reasoned argument without foul language or abuse aimed at all and sundry.

A great start to 2009 - Happy New Year.

I don't necessarily agree with Kilburn (in fact most of the time I don't), but I always respect his opinion.

I think the anti-Davies feelings stemp from the fact that we don't trust ND to make a good managerial appointment, he does, after all, have an extremely poor record in this area. Davies does have an excellent record, but fans have long memories and remember the excellent record which Joe Kinnear had when he was brought into the club. Personally, I worry about Doughty's ability to see the bigger picture, Kinnear failed because he put together an ill-disciplined squad, with little to no concern for training, fitness and such-like. In other words he tried to build a team in the image of what had worked for him previously. Sadly, the players he had lacked the self-motivation he had enjoyed at Wimbledon, where the spirit of 'proving the world wrong' drove the players on...not the case at Forest where many players think they've 'made it' by putting on the garibaldi.

I do admire Doughty for making his own decision and not pandering to the fans, however, this could be something of an own goal, as the team really needs the fans backing at this stage and Davies will have to be succesful from the off really, to win them over.

Personally, I have nothing against Davies and don't buy into the school of him not being wanted just because he's ex-Derby. I'll give him the same backing I gave Calderwood, right up until the very end, but I still feel that relegation is inevitable and if it does come, it won't be because of Davies, but that won't stop the vocal majority from blaming him.

Merci Kilburn, a cracking post.

To Congo, I don't buy that relegation isn't Davies' fault - he is taking over the club outside the relegation places. Admittedly by a fraction, but if he has any ambition to improve our lot - which is what he has stated - then avoiding relegation should be a given!

Beautiful post. Was more than happy with the appointment. Nige was never going to happen, it made no sense and would have been a rediculous gamble. Thankfully the board have more sense than many posters and have done the sensible thing. Good work NFFC.

Agree, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Unless he has some secret plan to ship in a team full of top-class talent in January, then he'll encounter many of the same problems which undermined Calderwood:- Defenders who can't concentrate for 90 minutes, inexperience in important positions, over-inflated egos.

My thoughts exactly Kilburn, you have learned well, we will never smash them from the outside, we must go undercover and smash from within..

Any managerial appointment is a gamble though. In our own history, for example, Paul Hart was made manager with limited experience and a poor record, yet he almost took us to the promised land. Joe Kinnear had an excellent record, but put our progress back five years.

Looking around the league at the moment, Darren Ferguson had no experience when Peterborough appointed him, yet he lead them to promotion in his first season and is challenging for a second succesive promotion this year.

I'm not for or against Nigel or Billy, but any manager should be judged on the enitrety of their reign and, whilst results are important, there is a bigger picture, which I really wish our chairman would see occasionally.

Thanks Kilburn, showing your true colours now methinks! As Zigga posted, this has helped restored my faith in the forum.

I look forward to a happy and prosperous new year under Mr Davies, and wish you and yours all the best

Quality post Kilburn. ;D

We all want the best for the club and at this given time ND & MA have secured the services of a Manager with a record that speaks for itself at this level. I have always supported the manager, regardless of our situation and I think that BD given the full support of the board can take the club forward.

Rather than start a new thread, I will follow the positive vibes of this one,

I agree with Kilburn on his summing up the situation, even if my heart said Nigel Clough and the mind said Brain Laws. Then you read all the negative stuff regarding Billy Davies and a long conversation I enjoyed with my Fester supporting best pal not long back, summed up much of fears of our new appointment.

I have never warmed to Martin O'Neil as a potential Manager at Forest, just because of the dire attrition football his team produced at Leicester City. They, for them wallowed in a small success that was based around hard work and negativity' to all things that is wonderful and pleasing to the eye about football. Now at Villa, his side is producing some wonderful counter attacking football and I think most neutrals would join me in hoping they break the stranglehold of the media's wonder four clubs.

My pal assured me that it was only O'Neil playing to both the teams and the crowds strengths, a team including Elliott, Savage etc were not going to play silky football, hje say's the Fester crowd would not want mamby pampy football, as displayed during Taylors reign at the club.

So if a manager is astute enough to play to the teams and then the crowds strength's, then I do not expect to see too many high balls from Forest as is the fear. Billy Davies if nothibg else has proved himself to be an astute character................lets go forward from here
