Rail Travel from Nottingham is out as both London Midland trains (which travel between Euston and Birmingham via Watford Junction) and East Midlands Trains (which travel from Nottingham to St Pancras via Luton) won't be running:

Whether this will change - I don't know.

The only way you could get the train from Nottingham to Watford Junction on Boxing Day would be to catch a train from Nottingham to Chesterfield, then to Birmingham and then get on Virgin Rail. Unfortunately, the first trip via this route won't get you into Watford Junction in time for kickoff, which is at 12 noon.

If you can get to a Virgin Rail station without catching a train from Nottingham then Virgin Rail are running some services to London Euston, calling at Watford Junction, on Boxing Day.

I looked on the National Express web site and it wouldn't take a journey from Nottingham to Watford on 26th December - it would take Nottingham to London with the first service of the day departing Nottingham at 0600 and arriving London 0930. You'd then need to get from London to Watford and have got the problem where the local trains (London Midland and London Overground) aren't running. The London Underground is running a reduced service and if the Metropolitan Line is running into Watford's Underground station, you're looking of a journey which will take at least an hour from central London.

The best way of getting to Watford from Nottingham on Boxing Day is to travel by club coach or drive.

Yeah, i've been looking into this. I drive the majority of this route everyday for work and so not sure if i can face it on my day off as well. Might be cheaper than the coach though.

Where do you think you are going to get a drink on Boxing Day before 11.00 a.m. It's a 12.00 o'clock kick off

220 miles round trip means approx 6/7 gallons of petrol at £5 per gallon is a basic cost of £30-£35. Coach travel is £13.00 so, unless you have more than 2 people in the car the coach is much more economical.

Despite only being about an hour down the road in Ipswich for Xmas, the 12 oClock kick-off time rules me out. Not going to ruin my Xmas day by thinking about getting up early Boxing Day

I'll see what happens for this match. I am tempted to offer you a lift in return for Boro but i make this journey everyday of the week pretty much and so didn't want to go through the same hell on Boxing Day as well!

The roads being quiet is no incentive, and neither is your other point!

They always kick off their Boxing Day home matches at 12.00 o'clock, don't know why.

A match which kicks off at 12pm would have people leaving the stadium around 2pm and given that most of the attendance is from the local area, it means most people can fit a 12pm match around family Boxing Day arrangements which would be more difficult if the match kicked off at 3pm. Therefore, getting more people into the stadium.

Surely that's not relative purely to Watford, though?

If consideration for locals was still a reason for fixture scheduling, then surely they'd still play local derbies on boxing day.

Agree with Rich. It also inconveniences Forest fans, which is totally unfair.

Although I understand the logic of that argument Watford are fairly unique in that stance. All clubs face that issue yet the overwhelming majority of games in the country on Boxing Day will kick off at 3pm and quite right too in my opinion. Plus many of the clubs kicking off at 3 will no doubt attract one of their best crowds of the season, Forest usually do when at home on Boxing Day which sort of destroys Watfords argument

Its not anything Watford came up with - its purely a guess of mine. I don't know why they made it a 12noon kickoff - is it going to be on Sky??

Looking at the Sky Sports site, there are fixtures scattered throughout the day and Leicester are playing Sheffield United in a match which kicks off at 18:00

Judging by the extreme variation in the fixtures, I guess it might be something the football league itself has requested??
