Was this really the plan?

Sorry if this has already been discussed. Found this little passage in the post, in relation to the injuries forest have had in the back four.

"While James Perch's fracture ensured that the club were robbed of the option of playing him at right back – and pushing Gunter into a more advanced role on the wing."

Was this really the plan? I know it says option but still seems strange to me...

Gunter is a decent wing back but we have out and out wingers that cannot get into the starting X1.
