A Surprise Package

Mon 17 May 2010
Nottingham Forest Academy Director Nick Marshall insists the club's Under 18s side exceeded all expectations this season.

The Reds won their section of the FA Premier Academy League and were pipped by Arsenal for the overall title after a scintillating play-off final at The Emirates Stadium last week.

Marshall is delighted at the progress the youngsters have made - if not a little surprised by the level of success they achieved.

He told Forest Player: "I apologised to the boys after the Arsenal game. I held my hands up because they have done far better than I thought they would do this season.

"It just goes to show that even after an awful long time doing this job you can never quite tell what you are going to get out of young players.

"It has been fantastic to watch them do what they've done this season.

"They have definitely exceeded my expectations, in winning the league, getting through to the final to play a team like Arsenal and doing themselves proud.

"They deserve great credit, as do the people who have been working with them all season."

why do they keep hyping it up so much when they are just going to get rid of most of them in the coming weeks

A lot have already gone from the U18 side that played last week. They were informed before the final.

Good interview from Nick Marshall on the OS, seems very confident about the even younger groups.

I couldn't tell you for certain.

Out of the U18's I think Mullen, Watson, Gibbons and Freeman are being kept on. I guess all the remaining 'over age' players (U19) will go apart from Darlow as none of them have surfaced this year. Not sure on the U17's.

He could've been kept on, as I say I'm not 100% sure.

It's difficult for goalies though. We had Paddy Gamble a few years ago who was an England Youth International and very highly rated by our former 'keeper coach, Dave Watson but it's very hard for them to break through, he's now at Alfreton.

If they rate Darlow ahead of him and if Redmond comes back from loan then he'd be hanging around as 5th choice, too old to play in the academy league, so he might as well go.

That's fair enough. When you put it that way it's a lot clearer. Must be difficult for keepers to break through and a lot must go by the wayside.

had to laugh while watching the interview with Nick Marshall. One of the best players in the U18 team is a right back who has been playing left back all season... it never ends.

That's the problem, clubs will always go with an experienced keeper wherever they can and there will only be 92 number one keepers in the football league.

Paddy Gamble was an England youth international like you say, Shane Redmond was Irish under-17 number one but never got a sniff off a first team place, Barry Roche showed promise but never recovered from that incident at Pride Park.

You can say that you need alot of luck to make it, but that's especially true of keepers.
