Tuchel for ENGLAND!

Though I can think of far worse Tuchel has never really convinced me much.

He flopped at chelsea but then a lot do. Though he did win the CL.

Since Mainz he's only managed big clubs like Dortmund, PSG and Bayern where it's presumably like managing Celtic.

The top clubs can just sling money at top players constantly and make it stick. A national team manager has the luxury of any player of that nationality at his disposal but is otherwise limited by the same.

Being a top club manager doesn't mean a manager will be a success at international level.

And if he doesn't then the media have their knives already sharpened on one key area.

If he fits what profile the FA wants then it's the choice they need to make. And since there's no quality English managers at all at the moment really, it's likely the quality of manager we need will need to be foreign.

That’s a bit disingenuous; winning the European Cup is the pinnacle of the club game, you can’t do much better.

It’s a bit like waking up in the morning in the middle of a sandwich between Ana de Armas and Scarlett Johansen and complaining it’s only Ana de Armas and Scarlett Johansen.

Certainly not at Dortmund, who are financially miles behind Bayern (as is everyone else in Germany).

He’s an innovative and versatile coach, whose teams I’ve seen quite a bit of, and the role of a pure coach, rather than that of someone thrown into the arms-race of outspending your rivals ever summer, might actually be a benefit, because Thomas Tuchel is a really, really good tactician.

Yes but with Chelsea it's almost expected or was at that time, that you would be in it and reaching the latter stages.

With the investment in their playing squad it can't be too much testing of a manager's ability to have them competing. Though I guess they have had a few...

I don't have many questions about him as a coach, I think he is in that World Class bracket. But I do worry about how he seems to constantly ruffle feathers and he usually leaves a club under some sort of cloud.

Mostly because he is typically German, and does not stand for any nonsense or interfering.

To be honest, the international game might better suit him, as he won’t have club politics to deal with, and he can just concentrate on preparing the team and that’s it.

Don't agree with this at all

Leaving winning the Champions League aside (which in itself can hardly be considered "flopping") they were 10th in the table when Lampard got sacked, then under Tuchel they went on a run of W11 D5 L3, finishing in 4th and qualifying for the Champions League

Then the season after he had them finishing in 3rd with a record of W21 D11 L6

OK they didn't have the best of starts under him in 2022-23 but it was still W3 D1 L2 when he left them which is hardly terrible, and then they absolutely tanked under Potter et al only winning another eight games all season, finishing 12th

And what have Chelsea achieved since then? Let's face it that club has been a bit of a shitshow in recent years so the fact Tuchel achieved the above with them only reinforces what a quality manager he is

I think he's a top, top manager, the only question is can he do it at international level?

Nikolče Noveski, who played under Tuchel and Klopp, noted "Tuchel's [management] was interested in fine details; his preparation for games is unparalleled. He is perfectionist, isn't afraid to challenge people and can be direct despite potential conflict".[20] Speaking on his management style, Marcus Bettinelli noted Tuchel emphasizes personableness with playing and non-playing staff, saying, "...whether you're the chef, the bin man or gardener [you can] feel the atmosphere. He likes to ask how your family are, how you're doing. It's small things like that [which] help you feel comfortable".[266] Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta said that Tuchel's man management was key in bringing success for Chelsea.

Tuchel certainly has a winning CV on top of the glowing references from players.

Also, who doesn't enjoy a character on the sidelines? "Look me in the eyes when you shake my hand!"

He's an astute tactician, certainly. His dodgy people skills might make him an uneasy fit for the England squad. Probably finish fourth and get sacked in August 2026.

National football is weird.
For a national team to succeed they need to play as a team.
We have a collection of individuals drawn mainly from the top 6 Premier Clubs.
With their Clubs, each player has become part of a closely knit club team.
Premier league teams are tribal, but every so often the tribal differences have to be put assunder and a collection of talented individuals used to kicking, shirt pulling and cheating each other are expected to bond and play as a team.
To me it is doomed.
