Put yourself in Harewoods position.

Hes 29, out of favour at Villa.

Last chance saloon for a decent contract.

Either - go to Wolves, get them promoted and earn a deal to play in the Premiership - with the wages that go with it.

Or, you can come back to Forest, play in a struggling team. At best, stay up and earn a championship contract.

At worst, end up in division 3. Forest couldnt afford his wages in League 1 (and hes far too good to be there) and therefore hes back rotting in Villas reserves.

It was good of him to consider us, but after Wolves came in I dont blame him one bit for going there.

Good luck to him. I think he has us at heart for even thinking about coming back here. Were we at the top with Wolves, Im sure he would have chosen us over them.

We were the only ones to offer him a job, he'd been out of work for over a year, and he thinks he's the next Brian Clough. Hardly a tough decision, not fair to compare him to Marlon.

Yeah and also, he's probably got another 20 years left in him top-level managementwise. The average striker plays first team football (at the top level) until mid thirties, and thats pushing it.

Fair play to Marlon, he's made a good career move.

I agree with this, Footballers have to make most money they can before they retire.

Before all the normal predictable lines are towed out, perhaps Forest fans should look a bit deeper.

Why was Marlon allowed to leave in the first place?

Couldn't be anything to do with a shi*e Chairman who allowed all the decent players to leave could it??

A club that can attract 20k average gates for poor football should not be facing a 4th season of third flight football in 5 years.

Wake up to the real problem with Nottingham Forest.

It has to be said, the argument for getting rid of Harewood was a bit - er - tenuous.

Get rid in November, get half a million, and (pretty much) nail down the certainty of relegation.
Keep till end of season, he may leave you on a free, but he may score enough goals to keep you safe from relegation. (in which case he may not have left anyway).

Personally, I'd have risked the half a million against not getting relegated.

He was sold (and I want to use the phrase "for a mess of potage", but I won't).
We went down.

Great bit of business, that. If relegation cost us a penny more than half a million, we should have kept him.

But - hey - we can't criticise the Chairman, can we...

Got to completely agree with Kilburn - whilst we have been languishing in the non-prem divisions, we have lost any of our true bargaining power. We have had to let all our young stars go and have always struggled to replace them. These players owe us nothing - they are striving to get to the top - bit like changing buses when you realise the one you're on isn't going where you want it to. So we had the sad spectacle of losing any number of players to teams who not so long before were not at Forest's level. We were forced to 'fire-sale' Stone, Jenas, Dawson, Reid etc. A bit like a girl who couldn't say no. Make an offer and off they go. As a club, we will not go anywhere until we are back in the top tier. Even then, the attitude of the 'I only go when it's a big game' fans will hold us back. We need to be in the prem to get the income needed to compete; as well as sky money, we need to have a more 'active' fan base who will ensure that we are well-off enough to hang onto our best players. Ambition seems to have been lacking at NFFC over the last 10 years or so.........or is it just ineptness.

Loan him to a club that are going to be playing premiership football next season therefore an almost guaranteed sale worth a couple of million or loan him to a team with an uncertain future in the championship where there is a slight possibilty of league 1 football who therefore have no inclination to buy. Theres a few million reasons to loan Marlon to Wolves and only 1 reason to loan to Forest, and that is sympathy.

We sold Harewood in November 2003, and went down the following season. Selling him while Johnson was injured was a poor decision, although we did try and replace him with Marlon King (!) who just happened to be utter dogwank. :(

Paul Hart always maintained that Harewood wanted to leave, even after he was sacked by Doughty.

A bit like the Kris Commons saga.

I think Marlon will always get a decent reception whenever he comes back to play with/against Forest

Reports are mixed on why the transfer happened to be fair, a lot claimed Marlon wanted to leave, some said the board forced him out you have no idea whose "fault" this transfer was.

Add to that we brought in Marlon King who admittedly didn't do much here but I think overall is probably the better player, well at least he gets game in the premiership now and scores goals.

Marlon was a darling of the fans and if you look back without the rose tinted spectacles he wasn't especially great. He needed 8/9 chances before hitting the net. He scored great goals like the one against Crystal Palace but was guilty of some abysmal misses. Two that stick in the mind are the header against Wolves (In the FA Cup I think) where he headed into the ground and over from about two yards out, I'm still not sure how this is possible! The other against Fulham where a ball was squared to him 10 yards out, result... Throw in.

If he was here now playing the same he'd be villified worse than Smith and Chambers.

Don't let that stop you have yet another dig at the board though. :bored:
