They are professional athletes in a sport which is almost entirely on leg strength (kicking and running) so it is not surprising.
If the socks are genuinely too small for the players then the club has contracts with kit suppliers who should make ones which fit.
Leads me to believe that they are partially going for the look as well as the socks being too small.
I'm not a manufacturer or know much about textile I've always thought it's to do with the design of socks.
Not sure how easy it would be to design a sock which fits tight under the knee but be loose around the calf area.
And the demand to look into it at this moment isn't great enough as it's only a handful of players doing it.

There are 'ties' that can keep the socks up if the calves were more generous but I'm sure ther would be a good reason why the players wouldn't be able to wear them if the calves were looser.

I would have thought that the holes in the socks solution would lead to problems in the winter with the cold air hitting hot muscles.
