Erik said:I went to Southampton Charlton yesterday. Based on that game (and our win in December) I honestly think we can finish above Southampton points deduction or not. They are under so much pressure and it shows.
That being the case any deduction will be irrelevent to us.
Charlton played like a team already relegated and Saints seemed scared shitless by a big crowd. In reality a poor game contested by two poor teams but enlivened by 5 goals and a missed penalty.Marriboom! said:I have spoken to a few saints fans who went yesterday, what was the match like?
Anything to fear when we meet on the last match of the season.
It's claimed the bulk of the debt is down to the new stadium. That being the case, if the holding company has the debt they must be paying for, and therefore, 'own' the stadium. So, how do the football club get an income? and how do they pay for the stadium on a matchday?sedgred said:I just cannot imagine that the football league are in a position to allow any creative accounting or sharp shares shuffle to allow Southampton off the hook.
No one could blame Ken Bates and Leeds Utd , Luton Town and a.n. Other who have suffered this penalty, not bringing action against the Football League, on behalf of their own clubs.
Joburgred said:I wonder if there would actually be any point in Southampton even attempting any legal or fiscal gymnastics to avoid what appears to be the inevitable. I would imagine that in the minds of those in control of the club the key issue will be getting rid of the debt by the easiest method possible.
Surely taking the hit now and starting with a clean balance sheet in League 1 would be in their interest.
If they insist in p**singoff the FA with legal challenges and chicanery like Masterbates did, it will just cost them more in the long run.
I think they will just want rid of the basic problem.
mouldy said:Yes but a championship club in financial trouble sounds a mcuh better prospect to a buyer than a league one club in administration doesn't it? Having the chance of staying up is the best thing for the club at the moment because interest in Southampton will drop if they do take the blow and are relegated now.

Joburgred said:I see your point but surely if they write off the debt and take the drop they will NOT be in administration anymore? The club is re-floated with a clean sheet in League 1.
That in itself may be an attractive proposition to an investor as he gets a "big" club cheap. Ummmm! Think I'll phone my uncle in Lehman Bros. - Damn they have gone into admin too!
Hang about - if every Forest supporter bought shares in Southampton's holding company at 1 pence in the the Pound - we could asset strip and relegate them AND ensure we won the last game of the season 50v0. Do you think the FA would suspect anything?

Will the points deduction come into play this season or next?
Apparently it comes into effect this season if it would effect who gets relegated?
Does anyone have an official line on this?
