... variously known as the Optimists' Thread, the Glass Half Full Thread and, perhaps a little harshly, the Excuses Thread.

With all the negativity flying around at the moment (I hate negativity) I thought it might be nice to make a little home in which anyone who doesn't feel the world is coming to an end after three narrow defeats can take refuge. I'll get the ball rolling - feel free to add good cheer as you see fit.

1) Despite three defeats in four, we are still third in the table, five points off the top and ten clear of seventh place.

2) There are still fifteen games left until the end of the season - more than enough to overhaul one of the two teams currently sitting just above us.

3) West Brom are currently on an amazing run (I think we upset them when we went to their place and gave them a good hiding). It won't last. They are currently facing yet another tough FA Cup replay and (with only one exception that I can see) it appears they are going to be playing twice a week from now all the way to April. They are going to get very knackered very soon and they will be wobbling just like we are now.

4) Despite being top of the table, the supposedly mighty Newcastle are also experiencing a bit of a blip. In fact, their recent results are very similar to some of ours - they gave Cardiff a 5-1 hammering, but then lost to Derby in their next game and haven't won again since (they very nearly ended up losing 1-0 to Swansea yesterday); we murdered QPR 5-0, lost to Derby the next game and haven't looked the same side since. I'm pretty sure Newcastle will come good again long before the end of the season, and I'm sure we will too.

5) We may not have signed anyone in the January transfer window, but (a) we NEVER do anyway, (b) nobody else made any really impressive signings, and (c) we've still got the loans window to look forward to, which is precisely where we excelled last year.

6) Our squad is the youngest in the league and getting better all the time.

7) Even if we don't go up automatically, we've a 50-50 shot at a trip to Wembley and a one-in-four chance of promotion through the play-offs.

8 ) We've already achieved a 19-game unbeaten run this season that we will be talking about for years.

9) We've beaten Derby for the first time in years this season, and we've given Leicester a thrashing too.

10) We have no major injury worries (for a change) and a squad which - even without the new loan additions that hopefully we'll be making very soon - is big enough to allow Billy to rest players when necessary.

Okay, that's my top ten, off the top of my head. Feel free to dive in and spread the love. Naysayers please try to avoid derailing the thread - remember you can always start up your own Thread of Misery if you don't like what's going on in here.

11)We've used the least number of players in the league

12)We haven't conceded more than one goal in a game for almost six months.

13)We still have Newcastle to play in a promotion 'six pointer'.

14)We have the best manager in the league by far.

Oooh Flagman you've made it go all big and funny! lol

This is a great thread and one to remind us on this rollercoaster that we're still in one hell of a great place and although it feels like we should be commiserating, we have much to be jolly about.

It's time to consider the reality.

To have a wobble yet still be in a strong league position at this time of the season is a credit to Billy and the team. :)

I think that is a quality way yo look at it and with nearly a third of the season left the wheels will fall off for other clubs like they have a little for us and Newcastle.

Quality thread virtually poetic.........

15) We have conceded less goals away (11) than any other team in the football league.

Every team has a wobble ( Derby have Commons) its better to have it now rather than in the last 5 matches of the season.

Mayb its because i'm too young for the ghost of BC to follow me everywhere, mayb its because i'm not a 'real' fan because I don't have a season ticket and go to every away game but this thread is about the most sensible one i've read in a long time. We're now a decent championship side who wins more than they lose :) I'd of picked a different team in recent games and signed shorey but we didn't and it's time to move on. Do I think billy is perfect? No. Do I think he is the best manager of my lifetime? Yes. Do I wish the tp had signed players this xmas? Yes? Did they stop the wasted money of platt et all and leave us with some very decent players this summer? Yes. We have a top chairman, a top manager and the beginings of a top team. Do I wish certain 'supporters' would remember what the word means? YES YES YES oh and hello to all from a newbie :)

Not much wrong with that opinion, to be honest.

I don't believe in booing the players, I never have.

I've booed a couple of Managers though (Platt and Megson!) in my time.

Every player who puts on the red shirt gets backing from me, and I won't slag them off if we lose.

Billy Davies has, for those who haven't noticed, turned a relegation-fodder side in to one challenging at the top of the Championship. He is a proven Manager at this level, and will deliver for us.

So what, we've lost three away games. We've only lost what, six matches all season?

Wolves lost ten in a season and still went up, we could to. The coming week could be interesting, as we can then bring in Loan players who would still be around for the Playoffs - if needed.

Get behind the team - from your seat in the City Ground, or your seat in the away end, or even your seat in your living room - doesn't matter - we're all Forest fans, and we need to back our team!!

YOU REDS!!

Personally I'm finding it rather pathetic that people are looking for conspiracies and faults when at the beginning of the season we all said we would be happy with a mid table position, incredibly happy at a playoff spot.

Now all players are pissed off, Billys going to get sacked at every point in time, and the whole world is ending. It's tiresome and very boring ! If we don't go up I'll still be bloody happy that we showed what the current team is capable of and can say at one point we pushed the leaders whilst getting some amazing results, all that after nearly being relegated the season before.

We have seen a glimpse of what Billy and the squad is trying to do. Lets be happy where we are and not try and destroy the team from our own boards please !

16 - weve won 7 on the spin at home - something hat hsnt been done for around 2 decades. If we beat the Sheff Utd on Tuesday it will be a new club record.

In football ALL TEAMS LOSE MATCHES - get over it, move on and lets start another run going

All things considered, things are going ok.

I intend to make the most of this rare season in which I'm actually able to say that.

Point six is debatable... If we're getting betting all the time then why have we started losing?

With respect, you might just as well ask why we haven't won every consecutive game 6-0, 7-0, 8-0, 9-0, 10-0, etc. since we beat QPR 5-0. 'Getting better all the time' means we're an improving side with great potential, and one or two negative results doesn't turn a clear general trend on its head.

Cracking post and thread, i think the next 4 games are huge and could ultimately decide our fate in terms of finishing in the top 2 or the playoffs:

Nottm Forest v Sheff Utd- Playoff chasers, scrappy team where we need to show some mettle

Nottm Forest v Middlesbrough-Again promotion chasing and on the up, tricky game

Leicester v Nottm Forest-Local derby and they will want to get 1 over us for the spanking we gave them

Nottm Forest v Swansea-In form, and very solid unit, unsure about their away form though

I reckon 2 wins and 2 draws would be ideal and realistic

Of course, if we win our next two home games (against Sheffield United and Middlesbrough) then we could be top of the league six days from now...!

That's actually not as far-fetched as you might think; we've won seven in a row at home, so who's to say we can't manage another two wins there... meanwhile, West Brom are away at Cardiff on Tuesday night and wobbly Newcastle face tricky Coventry the following evening. Newcastle then have unpredictable Preston at home next Saturday and West Brom don't play again until the Sunday (another away trip to due-a-win Bristol City).

Anything's possible in this league!

Alright, so Newcastle obviously didn't read the script, but everything else has turned out perfectly! So, while I'm on a roll, let's gaze into my crystal ball once again and see what's likely to happen next:

We're away at Leicester on Saturday and I'm predicting a draw - we haven't drawn in ages and I can't see us losing four away games on the trot. Of course, we might win, but let's not be greedy. Meanwhile, jittery West Brom face resurgent Derby who will definitely be out for blood following their crappy afternoon yesterday.

Before any of this, however, West Brom have yet another midweek game to contend with - an FA Cup replay against Reading. Fingers crossed the Baggies win this one, as then they'll be looking at a Quarter Final appearance, probably against one of the big boys, which will divert their attention from the league again and add to their fixture congestion problems (they're already in action twice a week practically all the way up to the middle of April, while we have only one game a week right up to the middle of March, giving us plenty of time to rest and prepare).

Then the following Saturday (6th March - keep up at the back) we're at home to Swansea looking to make it ten home wins in a row, while West Brom have to travel to QPR, who might just be about to return to regular winning ways after Briatore finally slung his hook.

The upshot of all this is that we could well be four points clear of West Brom two weeks from now, and even if they then go on to win their game in hand (at home to Sheffield Wednesday on the 9th of March) then we'll still be ahead of them on the same number of games played.

Let's see how that all pans out and then I'll take another look at it.

Let's also hope that Toon perform their habitual trick of "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory". They are due a speed wobble at some stage. :)
