From the BBC Doctor Who website:

Initially, Matt wanted to be a professional footballer and played for Northampton Town Under 11 and 12s, Nottingham Forest Under 12,13,14s and Leicester City Under 15 and 16s before a back injury forced him out of the game.

Just spotted this on a website by the name of Kasterborous.com:

The Mirror have spoken to some of his [Smith's] former coaches.

Mick Raynor, ran Nottingham Forest's youth scheme, where Matt Smith was a member of the under-13s side.

"Matt was a talented player. He was with Jermaine Jenas, Michael Dawson and Andy Reid who are all internationals now. That shows how highly we rated him."

Later on, Matt joined Leicester City, whose former coach Jon Rudkin recalls his determination.

"He was a central defender and we had high hopes for him. What struck everyone was how determined he was.

"He'd travel every day from Northampton. He was desperate to make it."
